BREAKDOWN

THE WEDDING SINGER

SYNOPSIS: THE WEDDING SINGER is based on the 1998 film of the same name, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The musical revolves around Robbie, who sings at weddings with his bandmates (Sammy and George), his failed relationship with his former fiancée (Linda), and his romance with a new love (Julia). It takes place in the 80s in Ridgefield, New Jersey. The musical premiered on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical.

SEEKING:

[ROBBIE] CAST: Blake Jenner. 30ish male, handsome in an approachable way. Strong singer who understands comedy. Based on the lead role in the movie of the same title. He is a singer at weddings.

[JULIA] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s - 30. She is the pretty “girl next door” in looks and personality. Engaged to Glen, but falls in love with Robbie, and is conflicted as to who to choose. Empathetic, caring and brave. We root for her. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo, G3 – F5.

[SAMMY] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 30. He is the bass player in the band, and one of Robbie’s best friends. He’s hyper-masculine, pretending to love being a bachelor, but is actually in love with Holly. Guitar playing a plus, not required. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, C4 – A5/Bb.

[GEORGE] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s - 30. He is the keyboardist in the band, and one of Robbie’s best friends. Sensitive and flamboyant, he is the foil to Sammy’s super “guy” attitude. His whole look is very Boy George in the 80s. Keyboard playing a plus, not required. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, C4 – A5.

[HOLLY] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 30. She is Julia’s cousin, very uninhibited and forward. Sexually promiscuous and always up for a good time, but wants to be loved, and is looking for romantic fulfillment in all the wrong places. She is in love with Sammy. Has great comedic timing. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo, A3 – E5. AN EXCELLENT DANCER.

[GLEN] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – early 30s. Handsome and rich. Julia’s fiancé. Seems like a nice guy at first, but we discover he is a bit of a womanizer - slimy, shallow and materialistic. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor, D4 – B5.

[ROSIE] Female, white, 60s – 80. She is Robbie’s grandmother, who raised him. Motherly, but adventurous and always doing her best to remain “hip” despite her age. Spunky, great energy, fun, with great comedic timing. She sings and raps. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo, C4 – C5.

[LINDA] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 30. She is Robbie’s fiancée, who jilted him, and didn’t show up for their wedding. She’s more in love with the idea of Robbie being a rock star than she is with Robbie. Trashy, oversexed. Looks like a female rock star. VOCAL RANGE: Alto/Mezzo, A3 – D5. AN EXCELLENT DANCER.

[MALE ENSEMBLE] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 60s. The men play Robbie’s drunk brother at the wedding, the priest at the wedding, a guy from Jersey, waiters, wedding guests, a bum, a groom at another wedding, Glen’s secretary, a loser guy and more. The men also impersonate Billy Idol, Mr. T., and Ronald Reagan. VOCAL RANGE: All. PLEASE NOTE: AT LEAST SOME OF THE ENSEMBLE NEED TO BE STRONG TECHNICAL JAZZ-BASED DANCERS, WITH PARTNERING A PLUS. The others should just move well.

[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s – 50. The women play Julia’s mom (Angie), a bride at another wedding, a girl from Jersey, waitresses, wedding guests, another mother, a loser lady and more. The women also impersonate Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Nancy Reagan, and Imelda Marcos. VOCAL RANGE: All. PLEASE NOTE: AT LEAST SOME OF THE ENSEMBLE NEED TO BE STRONG TECHNICAL JAZZ-BASED DANCERS, WITH PARTNERING A PLUS. The others should just move well.
