Breakdown
Updated 2/5: Description for role of Ariel has been revised. See below. We are committed to casting a diverse company. We are seeking actors of all cultures, ages, disabled and non-disabled. All actors must have a STRONG command of classical text. CAST: PROSPERO: SAM WATERSTON SEEKING: CALIBAN 20s-40s. Male. Son of an evil witch, abandoned on the island. Angry, as he is compelled to serve Prospero, who mistreats him. Although the text describes Caliban as “savage and deformed slave” in this production he is not deformed and is only perceived as savage because different from the Italians. Earthy, crude, sexy, macho, but with the soul of a poet. ARIEL Male. Must be 18+ to look as young as young as possible. A spirit of the island who is Prospero’s chief helper and slave. Mischievous, deft. Acts as Prospero’s eyes and ears, reporting back and carrying out orders in the hopes of gaining promised freedom for labor. Seeking an actor who SINGS and who MOVES VERY WELL. MIRANDA 20s, to play Late Teens – Early 20’s. Prospero’s daughter. Although her background is noble, she has lived on this island since she was three. Sheltered, naïve, but intelligent and curious. Right on the line between child and woman and perhaps confused by it all until she sees Ferdinand. ALONSO 60s. King of Naples. Shipwrecked on the island, he is consumed with grieving for his son who he believes is lost at sea. Aristocratic. We are particularly interested in considering actors of color for this role. SEBASTIAN 40’s -50’s. Alonso’s brother. An opportunist who is often negative or critical but covers it with a sharp wit. With his nephew seemingly lost at sea, he realizes that he is next in line for the throne. A born conspirator. Aristocratic. We are particularly interested in considering actors of color for this role. ANTONIO 50s. Prospero’s brother. Ambitious. Seeks every opportunity to grow his influence and control, and has no problem harming others along the way. An aristocrat. FERDINAND 20s. Alonso’s son and heir to the throne of Naples. An aristocrat separated from the rest of his party, his youth and infatuation with Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, make it possible for him to adapt quickly and find comfort on the island. Enthusiastic, eager. STEPHANO 30’s - 40’s. The king’s butler. Separated from the King’s party during the storm and shipwreck. Along with the King’s jester, Trinculo, he gets progressively drunker and wilder as the play goes on. A role for a brilliant comedic actor. We are particularly interested in considering actors of color for this role. FRANCISO 25-35. An aristocratic lord attending the King and his party. MASTER (OF A SHIP) and BOATSWAIN: 25-45. Sea-farers shipwrecked with the King. Seeking actors who are STRONG SINGERS AND MOVERS. SOME ACROBATICS A PLUS. IRIS and JUNO: Female. 20’s-30’s. Two spirits of the island. Seeking actresses who are STRONG singers. Some additional ensemble characters will be cast with non-AEA performers.
