THE SOUND OF MUSIC
MARIA: Female, 20-35, Vocal range top: C6, Vocal range bottom: Ab3. Fresh-faced with luminous presence, extraordinary singing voice, wide acting range. During the show she journeys from uncontrollable postulant to family matriarch.
CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAPP: Male, 35-45, Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: F#2. Charismatic and appealing leading man, who can initially appear distant and commanding, but ultimately romantic and supportive. Baritone. Guitar skills a plus.
THE MOTHER ABBESS: Female, 40+, Vocal range top: Ab5, Vocal range bottom: G3. Classical soprano / mezzo-soprano with commanding presence and warm humor.
BARONESS ELSA SCHRADER: Female, 30-40, Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: C4. Attractive sophisticate, witty, fine singer, graceful mover.
MAX DETWEILER: Male, 30+, Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: C3. Comedic entrepreneur, a show biz impresario, fun mover, colorful singer.
ROLF GRUBER: Male, 18+ to play 17, Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: D3. Telegram boy who is smitten with Liesl; he is increasingly leaning into the Nazi movement. Sings and dances.
SISTER BERTE: Female. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: B3. Mistress of Novices - A follower of strict tradition and not a fan of nonsense; rich, authoritative soprano voice.
SISTER MARGARETTA: Female. Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: B3. An empathetic nun who sees something good in Maria; her demeanor is more cheerful and forgiving; strong soprano voice.
SISTER SOPHIA: Female. Vocal range top: Eb5, Vocal range bottom: B3. The Mother Abbess’s third confident, perplexed about Maria.
VON TRAPP CHILDREN - all must sing in soprano range, including the two boys.
LIESL: Female, 18+ to play 16. Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: A3. A pretty and intelligent teenager, growing up without the guidance of a mother. Singer-dancer.
FRIEDRICH: Male, 14, Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3 (unchanged voices only). The oldest boy, trying to learn how to be a confident man.
LUISA: Female, 13. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3. Vaguely remembers her late mother, sometimes rebels by playing tricks on the governesses.
KURT: Male, 10 (almost 11), Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3 (unchanged voices only). Cheerful but sensitive and tries not to be hurt.
BRIGITTA: Female, 9. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3. Exceptionally bright and observant; she cannot tell a lie.
MARTA: Female, 7. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3 Honest and sweet, would like a pink parasol on her birthday.
GRETL: Female, 5. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: A3. A bundle of energy who just wants to be loved.
ENSEMBLE - NON-SINGING ROLES
Frau Schmidt - Efficient but caring and observant housekeeper.
Franz - the Butler, a former Navy man, now leaning toward joining the Nazis.
Herr Zeller - An Austrian nobleman who is urging the von Trapps to show allegiance to the Nazis; can be polite but has an undertone of menace.
Admiral von Schreiber - High-ranking officer in Hitler’s Navy, who arrives to press Captain von Trapp into service for the Nazis.
Baron Elberfeld - Neighbor and friend of Captain von Trapp. He is of the oldest family in the valley. Baroness Elberfeld - Baron Elberfeld’s elegant wife.
Ensemble will also play nuns, party guests and Nazi soldiers.
