THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTER
Please tape the sides that align with the role(s) you’d like to be considered for. Sides are here:

If you do not have access to a reader, you may prepare a one-minute monologue in the style of the show.
As this is a world premiere, we cannot share the script currently. A synopsis page is in the folder for your reference.
Please Note: If you are reading for VIRGINIA, you should only tape the sides with Rev. and John.
VIRGINIA BASS, Black, age 24. Ambitious and effervescent, Virginia has managed to carve out a fulfilling career for herself as a saleswoman – no small feat in 1919. She’s spent the past three years on the road, but now she’s come back to Chicago to seek validation and the assurance that her choice to leave home wasn’t in vain.
JOHN BASS, Black, age 53. A widower, stubborn, and proud to a fault. John has never gotten over his elder daughter leaving home to pursue her dream. It’s a personal affront to him. And with his financial troubles mounting, he has to consider the possibility that the only one who can bail him out is the daughter he resents.
REVEREND EUGENE MAXWELL, Black, age 25. Eugene is gangly and naturally shy. But like Popeye with spinach, Rev. Maxwell gets his power at the pulpit. He grew up next door to Virginia, but he doesn’t resent her for leaving Grand Boulevard; he’s in mourning for what could have been between them.
GEORGE OAKLEY, White, age 32. George is Virginia’s sales partner who, from time to time, has held a torch for Virginia, even as he preserves his professionalism. He has a brilliant mind, but can be socially awkward, which makes him and Virginia the perfect team.
LOTTIE DICKERSON, Black, age 49. John’s sister-in-law and aunt (and second mother) to Virginia and Daisy. An eternal worrywart, Lottie is suspicious of pretty much everyone and everything. She is the conscience of the play, though, and her clear-headed thinking helps keep the family safe when racial violence erupts.
DAISY BASS, Black, age 15. Virginia’s younger sister. Daisy has always looked up to Virginia, but her admiration is tinged with a bit of jealousy. She’s wide-eyed and whip-smart, so seeing Virginia’s ambition up close stirs up dreams of her own, which may have nothing to do with Grand Boulevard.
