Breakdown
WALLY SMITH. Male, early to mid-50s. Bari-tenor or baritone. Pharmacist who’s socially awkward, a bit wonky, but has found his “home” singing since high school with The Fabulous Lipitones. Hasn’t had a date with a woman in years, and, now in middle age, finds himself living with Mom. That’s why he clings to the idea of keeping this quartet together--it gives him “status” in this small town, a peer group, and meaning to his limited life. A constant object of Phil Rizzardi’s teasing, Wally has secretly begun to internet date on a site devoted to pharmacists: White Coat Love. But, he’s reluctant to share all personal information with his singing partners, since there’s much to be embarrassed or teased about. For him, achieving national recognition with the Lipitones could solve all his problems. Recently being named “The One To Watch” in Pharmacist’s Monthly has given Wally a small taste of the fulfillment fame can bring. Think Wally Shawn meets Matthew Broderick.
HOWARD DUNPHY. Male, early to mid-50s. Bari-tenor or baritone. Chief accountant at the Purina Dogfood Plant on the outskirts of town. A kind, gentle, and big-hearted man, Howard’s greatest shortcoming is his complete paralysis when it comes to making decisions, especially important ones. You’ll find him in the dictionary under “Waffler”, a quality that drives the other Lipitones crazy. Branding Howard a milquetoast is a bit harsh, but not far off. Indicative of his supple backbone is the fact that his wife left him for a Jehovah’s Witness, only to have Howard take her back in when he got word she was “ill”—which many in town know to be faked and a manipulation. Though cuckolded, Howard remains a blindly devoted husband. Think Jimmy Stewart meets Robert Joy.
