BREAKDOWN
PASTOR PAUL
Male, Mid 40’s- Early 50’s, Caucasian. Pastor of an evangelical mega church that he founded 20 years ago; he’s genuine, warm, knowledgeable, spiritual, & idealistic. Although he uses simple words, he’s a great communicator, and a man of deep convictions and belief. NOT the stereotypical televangelist vibe, but a man with profound faith, who is questioning a core belief.
ELIZABETH
Female, 40s, African American. Pastor Paul’s wife; both a supportive wife (of 20+ years) and also a spiritual leader in the church. Very attractive, compassionate, smart, more intuitive than her husband. She’s publicly supportive of Paul, but grows increasingly frustrated and angry at Paul’s change of belief and the collateral damage it does to her and their daughter. She believes he is undermining a core principle of their faith and their church.
ASSOCIATE PASTOR JOSHUA
Male, 30s, African American. Charismatic, passionate, street smart, connected to the congregation more than Paul. Younger than Pastor Paul. He was thrown out by his family then “saved” and mentored by Paul. Persuasive, dynamic, an evangelical with strong convictions. Honest and straightforward. Cannot agree to Paul’s new teaching.
ELDER JAY
Male, Early 50’s- Early 70’s, Caucasian. A physician and long-time church member and friend of Paul’s. A sharp dresser. As church has grown, Elder Jay has become the diplomat/peacemaker between Paul and the Church’s Board of Directors. Always seeking compromise, he always sees both sides.
CONGREGANT JENNY
Female, 30’s, Any Ethnicity. Character actress. Single mother from poor background; awkward socially, but deeply admires/thankful to Pastor Paul. Deeply devoted to this church and congregation. It is her home. Not intellectual, but inquisitive and honest, as she earnestly struggles to understand Pastor Paul’s message. Appealing and good hearted if a bit quirky. Sings in choir, actress needs to be able to sing parts in a hymn, but no more.
