BREAKDOWN

ARRIVALS UNTIL THE DEPARTURE

SYNOPSIS: Arrivals Until the Departure follows the journey of Amina, a transgender Muslim woman, who has recently left her unsupportive home and is living on a bench in Central Park. Throughout the show, Amina encounters the arrivals of a story-telling ghost, a drug dealer, a talking dress, and eventually, her mother, all of whom reflect her own struggles with identity and survival. This show transcends time to explore the ways religion silences marginalized voices and the tangled process of queer actualization in a hostile world.

SEEKING:

Amina (20s/F): A young transgender woman from a traditional Muslim household. Playful and sensitive under a world-weary armor. A recent runaway, Amina struggles to hold onto her identity and reality in a world designed to discard her.

Ghost (60s/F): An older hijabi woman who reveals herself to Amina at the start of the play. Laced with sharp wisdom and a hidden guilt from the past.

Dealer/Dress/Intercom/Man (30s/X - Any gender): Various satirical figures of authority, real and imagined. The Drug Dealer and Dress characters are two sides of the hustler mentality of sheer survival. The Man is a sincere but distant voice of tradition.

Mother (40s/F): Torn between maternal love and traditional Muslim family values, Amina’s mother is a strong-willed but quiet woman. Suspicious of Amina's queerness but willing to repress conflict at all costs, their bond is ready to boil over with words unspoken.
