Breakdown
The Chance Family
Hugh ‘Papa’– age ranges from 30-mid40s. A good man. Honest and fair. Beloved father and community member. Gifted pitcher who could have played major league baseball, but an accident to his pitching thumb condemns him to work at a paper mill in Camas, Washington. In his late 30's, he gets a second chance as a minor league pitching coach and relief pitcher.
Laura ‘Mama’ – age ranges from late 30 to 40. Extremely in love with Papa. Dogmatic Seventh Day Adventist. Unforgiving with any of her children who question the faith. Rabidly devoted to the church which saved her after she was sexually abused by her alcoholic father and abandoned by her mother. In understanding her wounds, we understand why she acts so harshly and clings to her religion.
Everett – age ranges 16-24. A natural leader, bigheaded, bigmouthed and bighearted. A genial anarchist who defies the system and rebels against oppression. Questions everything. Quick to voice his opinions without regard for the feelings of others. A self-proclaimed agnostic and radical libertarian. Attends the UW where he fully embraces being a hippie. Chooses a life of exile in Canada during Vietnam War. Ultimately, a romantic. Falls in love with Natasha and Russian Literature. Desperate to find his true self. Desperately wants to please and enchant others.
Peter - age ranges 15-23. Possesses a spiritual balance. Intellectually astounding and highly driven. Tall, athletic. Resembles his father. A good ballplayer. He seeks wisdom with the help of a Fulbright scholarship and academic guidance from Harvard. Forsakes the West for Eastern mysticism and moves to India. He buries himself almost to death in stale books and foreign mysticism in hopes of reaching an idealized self that is unattainable. Ironically, he has a fragile constitution and requires air-conditioning and western food.
Irwin – age ranges 14-22. Kind. Tall. Athletic. Built like a quarterback. A bit slow. The personification of goodness and innocence. Faithful to his mother and the pacifist teachings of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Drafted into Army and sent to fight in the Vietnam War. What he lacks in intelligence he compensates with faith and unrelenting joy. His gaiety is contagious, more so is his laugh. He is the familial hub of love, the child everyone gets along with. Loves to sing.
Kincaid ‘Kade’ – age ranges 12-20, the youngest of the brothers. The ‘narrator’ in the book. Loyal, faithful and devoted observer – Sensitive. Intelligent. Empathetic and somewhat removed. Not athletic. Little of his story is told. The glue in binding a broken family back together.
Winifred ‘Freddy’ -- age ranges 7-15. Twin sister to Bet. The youngest Chance siblings. Smart. Funny. The twins’ life trajectories split. Freddy sides with Papa and Kade in varied attempts to keep the family together.
Beatrice ‘Bet’– age ranges 7-15. Twin sister to Freddy. The youngest Chance siblings. Smart. Funny. The twins’ life trajectories split. Bet sides with Mama, becoming a religious bigot. Freddy sides with Papa and Kade.
