Breakdown
A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN
Janis/Janis Alternate - a force of nature, a genuine spirit, ''a white chick singin’ the blues,'' an original. The rock and roll legend. An old soul. Great, authentic rock & roll/blues voice with incredible range and chords of steel. Must be a natural actress, highly charismatic with a superb sense of humor and irony and something else – genuine star quality. This actress should be able to channel the spirit of this rock legend, without impersonation.
Joplinaires - Females, age 25-29, African American. Portray Janis’ musical icons over the years including: Etta James, Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Odetta, Big Mama Thornton, and Aretha Franklin. Not looking for impersonators. One of these actresses will sing Summertime in the original George Gershwin key. Strong Blues, Rock, and Legit vocal skills required.
PAINT YOUR WAGON
Ben-Male. Bitter after his wife's death, Tennessee State senator retreats from the world and travels out west, determined to keep to himself. Marries Cayla. Gruff, country Baritone.
H. Ford-Male. African-American. A fast-talking, extremely entrepreneurial free black man from New York City heads out west, determined to make his fortune. He is a wanderer by nature, suspicious of all others since most people have let him down. Baritone.
Female ensemble - seeking strong dancers with an alto belt
