BREAKDOWN

ABOUT THE PLAY: TAKING SIDES takes place in the American Zone of occupied Berlin, in 1946 where the American portion of the De-Nazification Tribunal has convened to take over the questioning of Wilhelm Furtwängler, one of the outstanding conductors of his time. Furtwängler was at the height of his career in 1933, just as Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. As the terrors of Nazism spread, many of Furtwängler's colleagues fled the country, whether out of protest or persecution, but Furtwängler mysteriously chose to stay. Did he stay to do as much good as possible in the face of evil, or did he stay to serve Hitler, of which he was later accused?

WILHELM FURTWÄNGLER (male, 50s-60s) A brilliant German orchestra conductor, no longer able to work due to the American investigation into his actions during the war. Controversial, erudite, intelligent, passionate, proud and arrogant.

EMMI STRAUBE (female, 20s) Major Arnold’s secretary. Sensitive, and often shocked by Arnold’s brusque manner. Reticent about sharing her experience of the war, but we discover that her father took part in a plot to kill Hitler.

TAMARA SACHS (female, 30s-40s) Determined to help prove Furtwangler helped Jewish musicians out of Germany. Forceful, insistent yet vulnerable and suffering from the loss of her husband, who was executed during the war, which has caused her to look older than she is.

HELMUTH RODE (male, late 40s) Formerly a second violinist in the Berlin Philharmonic. When called in for questioning he struggles to defend his actions during the Nazi control of Germany. Often appears meek and becomes vulnerable to Arnold’s manipulations.

LIEUTENANT DAVID WILLS (male, 20s) Major Arnold’s new assistant- born in Germany, but raised in the United States. Thoughtful, considerate, with a deep appreciation for art and music. He thoughtfully considers the reasons for people’s actions rather than judging a person on the actions themselves.

*The role of Major Arnold has been cast.*
