We are a repertory company. All actors will be cast in two of the three productions. Please note: MEASURE FOR MEASURE will have a continued run at California Shakespeare Theatre, from Sept. 20 - Oct. 8th.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE:

Please Note: All actors in MEASURE FOR MEASURE will play multiple roles, with all speaking roles covered by 8 performers.

VICENTIO: Male. The Duke of Vienna. Disguises himself as a friar to move in secret among his people while Angelo enforces his laws. Virtuous and kind, but too soft hearted.

ANGELO: Male. Vincentio’s Deputy. A man torn between his love for the rigor of law and his lust for Isabella. Ultimately, a hypocrite.

ESCALUS: Male or Female. Advisor to the Duke, and later to Angelo. Merciful, but loyal to a fault.

CLAUDIO: Male. A young gentleman, Isabella’s brother, who is sentenced to death for fornication.

LUCIO: Male or Female. A flamboyant bachelor and friend to Claudio. Requires good comic skills.

PROVOST: Male or Female. Official in charge of the prison. A good-hearted person who is required to carry out unjust orders.

ELBOW: Male or Female. A dim-witted constable who arrests those guilty of sexual misconduct. Speaks in malapropisms. Requires good comic skills.

POMPEY: Male or Female. A clown and a rogue. Pompey works as a tapster for Mistress Overdone, but is also a pimp.

BARNARDINE: Male or Female. A slothful and drunken murderer who has been in prison for nine years. Refuses to be executed. Comedic skill required.

ISABELLA: Female. Claudio’s sister. A chaste and virtuous woman who is training to become a nun and is forced to make a choice between her chastity and her brother’s life.

MARIANA: Female. A woman who was engaged to Angelo before losing her fortune. Still in love with him.

JULIET: Female. Claudio’s wife. She is pregnant with their child, which was conceived before they were married.

MISTRESS OVERDONE: Female. A madam who continues to ply her trade even after numerous warnings and is arrested for it.

THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA:

DUKE: Male. The Duke of Milan, father of Silvia. Hot tempered, authoritative, and ultimately a coward.

PROTEUS: Male. Mercurial and ruled by his passion. Willing to betray his friend and his girlfriend to get what he wants in the moment. Deceptive.

VALENTINE: Male. Honorable and noble, goes from mocking Proteus for being in love, to falling in love with Silvia. Not the most perceptive of men.

ANTONIO: Male or Female. Proteus’ father or mother. Authoritative. Concerned about Proteus’ education.

PANTHINO: Male or Female. Servant to Antonio.

THURIO: Male. A foolish and egotistical courtier, suiter of Silvia, rival of Valentine, and favorite of the Duke.

EGLAMOUR: Male. A knight in the court of Milan whose lady love has tragically died.

HOST: Male or Female.

OUTLAWS: Male or Female. Criminals banished from Milan. Double as musicians. Singing and ability with a musical instrument required.

SPEED: Female. Valentine’s servant. Extremely bright and adept at wordplay. Excellent language skills a must.

LAUNCE: Female. Proteus’ servant. A bit slow. Excellent comic skills and willingness to work with a dog on stage required.

JULIA: Female. A young woman of Verona. Proteus’ beloved. Dresses as a man to follow him to Milan.

SYLVIA: Female. The daughter of the Duke of Milan. Valentine’s beloved. Strong-willed and adept at courtly maneuvering.

LUCETTA: Female. Julia’s maid. Wiser in the ways of the world than her mistress.

THE 39 STEPS:

HANAY: Male or Female, but plays as Male, 30s-40s. A dapper English gentleman who is swept up on an adventure far beyond his expectations. British dialect.

WOMAN: Female. Plays Pamela, Annabella, and Margaret. Requires German, British, and Scottish dialects. Deft characterization skills required.

CLOWN 1: Male or Female. With Clown #2, plays all other roles in the production: male, female, inanimate objects. Excellent comic, dialect, movement, and characterization skills required.

CLOWN 2: Male or Female. With Clown #1, plays all other roles in the production: male, female, inanimate objects. Excellent comic, dialect, movement, and characterization skills required.
