Romeo: Male/All Genders. 20-29, Idealistic, passionate, funny, tender, impulsive; masculine. Falls deeply in love with Juliet, the daughter of his family’s enemy. Torn between loyalties, Romeo is swept into violence and cannot escape his fate. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Juliet: Female/All Genders. 20-29, Fiery, strong willed, and brave. Tough and headstrong. Falls deeply in love with Romeo, the son of her family’s enemy, and displays incredible courage in pursuing that love. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Mercutio: All Genders. 26-35, Romeo’s best friend; a master of wit, imagination, and playfulness. Has a brilliant mind and volatile temper; extroverted, sexually charged. Charismatic. Excellent fighter. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Benvolio: All Genders. 20-29, Nephew to Montague and friend to Romeo. He is a natural peacekeeper. Has strength and compassion. Is an old soul. A loyal and a thoughtful presence. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Tybalt/Apothecary: All Genders. 20-29, Tybalt is Juliet's cousin. Hot-tempered and aggressive, quick to seek revenge, has no desire to end the Montague/Capulet feud. Alpha male. Excellent fighter. Apothecary is a druggist who grudgingly sells Romeo's poison. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Paris/As Cast: Male/All Genders. 20-36, The suitor to Juliet most preferred by Capulet. A good guy. Not a clown. Comes from a good family. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Lord Capulet/Chorus: Male. 50-59, Juliet’s father; neglectful father, though one who loves his only daughter deeply. Though not involved in her day-to-day life, he has a deep desire for her to marry well. Capable of real fire and also real compassion. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Lady Capulet/As Cast: Female. 45-59, Juliet’s mother. Though she has left the day to day raising of Juliet to the Nurse, she is nevertheless quite attached to her only child. A neglectful, but loving mother. In the end, one who prioritizes the will of her husband over her daughter’s. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Friar Lawrence: Male. 40-69, Confidant to Romeo. A natural peacemaker, he has the best intentions to both help the young lovers and to maintain peace between the two families. Strong facility with language. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Nurse: Female. 40-69, Juliet's confidant. Distractible, big hearted and warm, unintentionally very funny. Great comedic AND dramatic depth, with an ability to shift quickly between both. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Prince: All Genders. 40-69, The Prince is the royal of the land and threatens deadly punishment in his frustrated desire to stop the long-running feud between the Capulets and Montagues. He is given the respect of his office from everyone and is both admired and feared. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Abram/Balthasar: All Genders. 18-29, A servant of the Montague house. Is a trusted friend to Romeo, and they have a brotherly relationship. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Sampson/Friar John: All Genders. 18-29, Sampson is a servant to the Capulet’s. A hot-headed teen. Well meaning, but reactive. Friar John is a Franciscan friar charged by Friar Lawrence with taking the news of Juliet’s false death to Romeo in Mantua. Friar John is held up by a quarantine and the message never reaches Romeo. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
Gregory/First Serving Man: All Genders. 18-29, Servant to the Capulet’s. A hot-headed teen who ‘bites his thumb’ at Abram, and quickly becomes the catalyst of a brawl. Aggressive and reactive. Note: Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Any Ethnicity.
