BREAKDOWN
Alexander Pushkin: African-American Age mid 20s-mid 40s. Short-tempered, impulsive, brilliant, charismatic. Displays a mixture of insecurity and braggadocio, these traits wedded to the arrogance of one born to wealth and recognized as a genius.
Natalya Pushkin: Caucasian Age 20s-mid 30s. Young, tall, beautiful. Self-involved and haughty. Ordinarily fun-loving, occasionally prone to black despair. Accustomed to having her way.
Katarina Goncharova: Caucasian Age 20s-mid 30s. Also young and beautiful. Slow to passion, but capable of it.
Alexandra Goncharova: Caucasian Age mid 20s-mid 30s. Although plain, resembles her sisters. Neurotic and intellectual. Ordinarily shy, self-effacing. Sometimes stiff. Bashful and polite manner conceals essentially willful nature.
Madame Goncharova: Caucasian Age mid 50s-mid 60s. Madame Goncharova is the mother of the three sisters. Level-headed. Indifferent to “intellectual” matters. Materialistic.
Nicolai Gogol: Caucasian Age 30’s. Gogol is polite and pleasant, but also of a dispassionate – even slightly cold – nature. Gogol is in awe of Pushkin, but, although he is not inclined to announce his prejudices, his eyes convey his somewhat satirical take on most other people. Unprepossessing.
Tsar Nicholas I: Caucasian Age mid 30s-mid 50s. Tall. Self-confident. Imperious. His manner is scrupulous but vaguely menacing.
Count Benkendorf: Caucasian Age mid 40s-mid 60s. Invariably aggressive, whether occupied in fawning or in interrogating others. Devout. Enjoys power.
Baron Delvig: Caucasian Age 30s-early 50s. An actor with some suavity and intelligence. Preferably tall and graceful. Delvig will occasionally show a gentle, sensitive side.
Count D’Anthes: Age mid 20s-mid 30s. He is tall and graceful. He is intelligent, suave, shrewd, impulsive and adaptable. He is not cowardly. He reads people well. He is ambitious and has a brash manliness which many men and women find attractive. He is only partly able to conceal his large measure of self-love.
