It’s 1938 and the Carter Family Savoyards are touring upstate NY. Down to just four singers, they perform An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan. But when the theater manager insists on a full production of The Pirates of Penzance or they won't get paid, they recruit three more singers and try to manage a 7-character operetta with lightning quick changes, cross-dressing and backstage romances. It is a screwball backstage comedy with music. All roles require singing and great comic timing.
All roles in Precious Nonsense require strong comedic timing and physical comedy.
Seeking:
RDC CARTER
Male, late 50’s, baritone. Head of the Carter Family Savoyards, considers himself the Martyn Greene of American G&S. On the outside he is imperious, but he is actually a pushover. He also was quite a womanizer in his younger days. His wife, Angelina always reminds him of that.
ANGELINA CARTER
Female, mid 50’s, mezzo. Wife of RDC. She is a woman who can stop traffic with one look and in the old daysa man to his knees. Still very attractive and loves playing “the diva” but can also be a teenager-in-love when it comes to RDC.
FREDERIC CARTER
Male, about to turn 25, tenor. RDC and Angelina’s son, about to turn 25. He is a tenor, a little naive and would like to get out from under the domination of his mother - who expects him to lead the company when she and RDC retire. He falls for Mack/Mabel when he thinks it is a man, but continues to love Mack/Mabel when it is revealed she is a woman.
JOSEPHINE WELLINGTON
Female, around 25, soprano. She is the fourth member of the Carter Family Savoyards, but not related to anyone. She loves to sing and might be called “a blond” today. She sings soprano. She seems to be a ditzy dame with a heart of gold but she is smarter than everyone thinks. In her circuitous way, manages to make everything happen. The parental Carters expect that Josephine and Frederic will marry and carry on the company
HERBIE VICTOR
Male, 40+ Is the long-suffering music director. He has a wry sense of humor. The actor playing Herbie plays the score. Must play piano well. He participates in the scenes from the keyboard.
PETE PATTERSON
Male, 30 baritone with lots of range. The stage manager, he has been with the company for a while. Pete is a totally backstage person but is forced into taking a role in Pirates. A nebish who becomes a swashbuckler.
MACK/MABEL MABELMAN
Female, 18-23, soprano Mabel Mackman is Josephine's younger sister who is recruited to be in the full Pirates production. Mabel has been dressing as a young man in order to work. All the characters, except Josephine believe Mabel is a young man.
