(is in her 20s) Mezzo belt. Upper class British accent. A feisty, smart and progressive young woman. Her wit, independent spirit and desire to do something of real use in her life are in conflict with society’s expectations of a 19th century woman. When she finds herself unwed and pregnant, it is a potential tragedy, and she must find a way to save herself and her family. She’s our heroine and our emotional center.
(is in her 20s-early 30s) Mezzo belt. Working class British accent. Elinor’s maid and confidante. She is loyal, smart, witty, and resourceful. She possesses a clear-eyed view of the world and its workings and is used to being overlooked and underestimated. She has secret “female trouble” of her own and, given her lowly station, her situation is even more desperate.
(is in her 20s) Soprano belt. Upper class British accent. Elinor’s beautiful, naïve and complacent younger sister. Her highest ambition is to marry well and be a Lady of Means. She learns she is not as delicate as she thinks.
(is in her 30s) Contralto. Upper class British accent. Elinor and Jane’s dear friend and neighbor. Mother of eight or nine children, she’s not sure, but too many for her. She’s earthy, bawdy and always up for a good time — of which there are too few.
(is in his 20s-30s) Baritone with upper range. Upper class British accent. Elinor’s fiancé. A sweet Mr. Darcy type who loves Elinor for exactly who she is and shares a similar world view. He naturally abides by social convention but is introspective and open to enlightenment.
DINGLEY (is in his 20s-30s) Baritone. Extreme upper class British accent. Jane’s fiancé. A wealthy industrialist and terrible snob, with a very high opinion of himself, certain that the world revolves around him and his needs. Despite some truly unethical choices, he’s convinced that his motives are always pure and well-meaning.
GALLOPING DICK (is in his 20s-30s) Upper class British accent. A charming and handsome rogue who roams the forest stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Confident that his reputation precedes him, but it doesn’t.
(is in her 40s-60s) Contralto. Upper class British accent. Stanton’s Aunt. Rigid, elitist and used to getting her way. Blindsided by the news her nephew, Stanton, is marrying Elinor, thereby entitling Lady Catherine’s estate to Eleanor instead of Lady Catherine’s own daughters. She is determined to do anything to stop the wedding and retain her hold on the family fortune.
(is in her 40s-60s) Mezzo. Working class British accent. Based partially on a real-life notorious and wildly successful midwife who advertised and practiced in America in the 1830s, known as The Wickedest Woman in New York. She is street smart, pragmatic, hardworking, resourceful, good-natured and brisk. Gimlet-eyed about the injustices in society. Passionate about her cause, refuses to be intimidated, and is willing to break the law for what she believes is the greater good.
(is in his 20s-early 30s) Tenor. Working class British accent. Trans. The Bentons’ loyal and stalwart stable boy, who we later discover is transgender. Clever and funny, but only shows it when he’s with Dabney, on whom he has a secret crush.
(is in his 40s-60s) Baritone. Upper class British accent. Portly, pompous, hypocritical — fond of Petunia, Hot Luncheon Meats and Power. The Chancellor of Morality, he wields great power in London society – and is willing to wield it for the highest bidder.
(are in their 30s) Contralto. Featured Ensemble Roles-Upper class British accent. Both played by the same actress. Lady Catherine’s quite grown and possibly feral spinster daughters. Looking for love and approval from their mother. Neither seems likely. Lady Catherine can never tell the difference between the two, and neither can we. Doubles as MRS. BENTON, NOBLE SEX WORKER et al.
All are funny; great singers, good movers, and capable of playing a variety of characters.

(late 20s/early 30s) Sober, practical, sharp as hell. The Liz Lemon of the Kingsbridge Faire. Has kept her distance from her dad’s Faire for years by running the Faire's payroll and taxes from her real-world job in insurance; but agrees to return to save her fuzzy-headed father’s life’s work, because beneath her dry and skeptical armor she aches to sing and swing a sword and believe in fantasies again. Loves her sister and fights with her furiously. High belt (up to F or F#) with unique tone; wide vocal and emotional range.
(33-40-ish) The perfect knight. A true believer and Faire lifer. Lives every day as a knight of the Tudor court. Never gives his real name; must be paid in gold. Despises all technology. Lives in a tent he calls his “pavilion.” Unparalleled at swordsmanship, jousting, melee, gallantry, seducing, and ugly rabblerousing demagoguery. Hates modernity and longs to remake the world as his personal kingdom (or game preserve). Utterly confident, devastatingly charming, monstrously selfish and ready to drag us all back to the past. Heroic baritone/tenor with masculine tone, belt to G or Ab preferable.
(20s) Gwen’s younger sister. Romantic and impulsive but could never actually live in the past without WiFi. Has always been a princess of the Faire but has never had any real power. Is seen as flaky and dreamy in contrast to Gwen, but later is revealed to have taken on a lot of responsibility with no credit. Fears she’s the “Fredo,” but genuinely dedicated to this magical place. Loves and envies her sister. Holds grudges. No filter. Belt to E or higher.
(late 20s or 30s) Gwen’s childhood best friend. Now a local lawyer representing the Mirandola family and their Faire. Carries torch for Gwen since they kissed at the age of 15, right before Gwen fled. More amiable than ambitious; prone to taking directions but a decent guy. Wants to be a hero. Baritone/tenor, belt to G if preferable w/ lyrical tone too.
(55-65) Creator and owner of the Kingsbridge Faire. An enthusiastic and extravagant dreamer with terrible follow-through and no organizational skills. For decades he’s relied on his family -- first his wife, then his daughters -- to clean up his messes. Comes across as robust, jolly and authoritative but hides a secret. Bass/baritone, belt to high F# preferable.
(45-50) Pirate Queen. A co-founder of the Faire. Runs the R-rated, family-unfriendly Pirate District, the sketchiest, raunchiest and most profitable part of the Faire. Unflappable, rocking a dominatrix vibe and teaches middle school in real life. Darkly amused feminist, regal, unapologetically sexual and unafraid of trouble, she's loyal and principled and has a no-tolerance policy for bullies. Iron-lunged belt to high F preferable.
(45-60+) but magical -- if younger, should be weathered. If older, made of iron. Either way, a former warrior who has lost none of his power or skill. An enigmatic (and possibly ageless) blacksmith. Speaks in quiet, cryptic phrases. Everyone thinks he’s a nut, who came back from Iraq a bit touched in the head. May actually be an immortal being thousands of years old who’s witnessed every war in history. Humble but clear-sighted. Loves justice, hates tyranny. Makes beautiful swords, some of which may be magic. Bass/baritone, belt to high F.
(40-55) Swordsman and unofficial leader of the Lords Of Misrule, the Faire’s headlining swashbuckling comedy team. Genial, cheerful. In real life a divorced dad with two Nissan dealerships, every summer he becomes a local star, a paragon of chivalry and a sexual adventurer. Gallant and oddly sexy. Admires Roland’s dedication to historical accuracy, but too kind not to eventually realize his mistake. Heroic tenor (belt to A).
(28-45) Swordsman, one of the Lords Of Misrule. Preferably Iberian or Mediterranean. Genial but aristocratic with a pronounced Castilian lisp. Falls under Roland’s spell a bit too easily. In the real world he’s a speech therapist; every summer becomes a local star, a paragon of chivalry and a sexual adventurer. Baritone/tenor (belt to G).
(30-40) Swordsman, one of the Lords Of Misrule. A hypercompetent jack of all trades (calligraphy, notary, DJ’ing, ordained minister). As a person of color, keenly aware of the ironies of loving a Faire celebrating a historical era underpinned by white colonialism; but nerds love what they love. Of the three Lords he’s the most resistant to falling under Roland’s spell. In the real world works in IT; every summer becomes a local star, a paragon of chivalry and a sexual adventurer. Bass/baritone (belt to F#).
(50-60) A designer of gorgeous medieval gowns; the first (and best) crafter at this Faire. Rightly proud of her talent. Strongly countercultural, intersectional feminist and politically aware. Funny and cranky; a granola Melissa McCarthy; a younger, female Bernie Sanders. Brave as hell: she chose this life when it was unthinkable and is ready to fight for it. The artisans who build, weave, forge and sell crafts at the market think that they are the real point of the Faire (and the performers are self-indulgent window dressing). But Lady Eve understands community and justice, and rejects Roland’s regime, loudly. Alto.
(30-50) A med school graduate and trained nurse practitioner; serves as both the Faire’s medic and the local herbalist. A crafter and not a performer, so she doesn’t bother to put on the Faire’s fake-English accent. Down to earth and sensible. Has a recurring affair thing with Morningwood. Mezzo.
(35-45) Faire’s foremost minstrel/jester/juggler/herald/falconry act. Prickly and resentful. Jealous of the popularity of the Lords Of Misrule. Loves the Faire, but also covets power and respect, so becomes Sir Roland’s enabler and henchman. Has strong opinions that no one usually wants to hear, so Roland's ear is a gift. Voice: strong tenor (belt to Ab).
(18-35) A flower seller / pixie who wanders the fair looking (and acting) like a Dr. Seuss-type fairy, selling roses. Saucy. Flirty. But not above giving her enemies a saucy finger. Also Ensemble, playing several roles including: Ladies of the court, fortune tellers, pirates, Morris dancers, musicians, puppeteers, Faire customers. Strong belt.
(30-50s) A sexy warrior. Ensemble, playing several roles including: Ladies of the court, fortune tellers, pirates, Morris dancers, musicians, puppeteers, Faire customers. Strong belt.
(late 20-30s) A cosplay werewolf girl. Sometimes wears sci-fi cosplay instead. May play Boba Fett. Also Ensemble, playing several roles including: Ladies of the court, fortune tellers, pirates, Morris dancers, musicians, puppeteers, Faire customers. Strong belt.
(25-40) Ensemble (Morris Dancer, Police Officer, Roland’s Henchman) Also playing several roles including: Pirate servants to the Pirate Queen; human chess pieces; thief in the stocks; turkey leg hawkers; jousters; musicians, puppeteers, Faire customers. Tenor.

(30s-50s.) A beastly, charming curmudgeon. Scary but with a heart underneath his gruff exterior. Has the size and presence of a Music Hall superstar with deft athleticism. A triple threat. A strong, booming baritone singing voice with falsetto.
(20s) The Grinch's dog, a young pup at heart. Endlessly energetic and acrobatic. Extremely loyal, shows great patience and humor in the face of adversity. A strong Tenor singing Voice.
(50s-60s) A trustworthy, benevolent narrator who is inspired by nostalgia. With his urbane elegance, long-limbed grace and gently sardonic humor, he actually reminds us of Dr. Seuss. A strong bass-baritone singing voice.
(30s – early 40s) The father of the family, the calm eye of the family storm. Goodness and benevolence pour out of him. A moral example for the rest of Whoville. A strong high baritone or baritenor singing voice.
(30s – early 40s) Quirky, funny, on the brink of saturation but still maintaining complete control. Until... A strong, warm soprano singing voice with chest range as well.
(40s –50s) The eldest of the family, comically hard of hearing. Not unlike Grandpa Simpson. A strong character baritone singing voice.
(40s –50s) Loving, has the ear of the children and the patience to calm them. A strong character mezzo singing voice.
(6 actors, 20s –40s). Seeking different types and vivid personalities. The more physically versatile the better. Strong singing voices of all types.
