BREAKDOWN
This charmer of a play by John Patrick Shanley, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Doubt, whisks you away on a delightful journey to the farmlands of Ireland. Outside Mullingar is the story of an unlikely romance between two rural, middle-aged neighbors: Anthony, an introverted farmer and Rosemary, the woman who vows to have him – at all costs! Poetic, uplifting, dark and funny, Shanley lovingly spins a tale infused with a deep yearning for heart, homeland, faith and a sense of belonging.
SEEKING:
Tony Reilly:
Age 75 or so. Male. There is a darkness in Tony — It would have consumed him without the influence of his late wife - and his son, Anthony. More devil than leprechaun. He sees the worst in things and people. Sharp tongued and ornery. Completely lacking in sentimentality and relishes it when everyone else is upset. If he’s miserable, everyone is going to be miserable. Droll, funny, resentful, stubborn and fierce. Actor must be facile with language, and Irish accent and comfortable memorizing lines of dialogue.
Aoife Reilly:
Age 70 and shows her age. Female. She shows her age beyond her years from a hard life working a farm. Droll and often talks about her oncoming death and what’s for dinner in the same sentence. Rough around the edges and doesn’t suffer fools. Contrary but witty, she’s the counterpart to Tony, who has been her reluctant friend and neighbor since childhood. Like Tony, there’s not a sentimental bone in her body, but she wants a good future for her daughter. She sees clearly that Rosemary and Anthony are meant for one another. Ill herself, she grieves for her late husband deeply, but only allows the emotion to last a moment before she has recovered her stonier facade. Facile with language, Irish accent and comfortable memorizing lines of dialogue
