Please prepare two brief contrasting monologues: one Shakespeare and one contemporary. Those who wish to sing may replace a monologue with a short song. No more that 3 minutes total. If you plan to sing, please bring sheet music--accompanist provided may not transpose. Please bring one p&r stapled

Adapted from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure.
Set in the mid 1880’s in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, “…Blazing Saddles meets Shakespeare—with Native Americans taking the reins.” With healthy doses of humor and music, OFF THE RAILS tackles the controversial and rarely discussed topic of American Indian boarding schools in the late 19th century in the American West.
Madame Overdone: 35-55, Native American (Lakota and French): Keeper of a saloon/brothel. Mature woman of considerable charm, personal power and beauty.
Isabel: 20s-35. Native American (Pawnee): Momaday’s older sister, attending Normal school to become a teacher. The smartest person in the territory. Men swoon for her.
Momaday: 20-30. Native American male (Pawnee): A 16 year-old, loves Caitlin, married her in the old Pawnee way and she became pregnant. Because the marriage wasn’t Christian, he is sentenced to death.
Alexie: 20s-40. Native American male (Creek): A smooth talking eccentric in dress as well as behavior. A tribal Chairman’s son, `a la “Prince Hal” from Henry IV. Also plays the Preacher.
James McDonald: 35-55. Native American (Choctaw): Mixed heritage, Princeton educated, and proper, a counselor to General Gatt and a former soldier. Looks out for those people less fortunate than himself
Grandfather: 50s+. Native American (Pawnee): Traditional keep of the stories, songs and dance.
General Gatt: 30s-50s. Any ethnicity. Winking at Richard Henry Pratt who coined the term, “Kill the Indian, Save the Man”--an amalgamation of frontier opportunists and politicians, a Brigadier General and Mayor of Genoa. Also plays Elbow: a deputy, a sober DOGBERRY from Much Ado About Nothing. Also plays B’Stard Abhorson: a wild-looking executioner with a strong French Accent.
Angelo: 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. A captain in the Army, treaty scholar, and superintendent of the boarding School. He rules Genoa during Gatt’s absence.
Pryor: 20s-50s. Any ethnicity. A fast-talking clown and a wild-west character. The funniest person in town. A bartender and tapster for Madame Overdone.
Cowboy: 20s-40. African American. a la Cowboy Curtis from Pee wee’s Playhouse, a campy cowboy. Also plays Sheriff: a good-hearted person in a bad job.
Mariana: 20s. Any ethnicity. A dance hall girl, the jilted fiance?e of Angelo, whose family died in the Indian wars. Must be able to sing.
Caitlin: 20s. An Irish girl whose father died in the Indian wars and her mother died in childbirth. An orphan, familiar with the boarding school, she fell in love with Momaday. She will sing part of a traditional Irish Gaelic lament for her husband,

Hannah is two weeks away from becoming a board-certified neurologist when a mysterious package arrives from her Korean grandmother-- who may, or may not have, just ended her life in a most flamboyant fashion. The package leads Hannah and her family on a surreal, comedic, heartbreaking adventure to the Sunrise Dewdrop Apartment City for Senior Living on the south side of the Demilitarized Zone (and beyond), with guest appearances from the Ghost of Kim Jong Il, a mythological tiger, and other mischievous fragments of the family's past.
HANNAH–Asian (Korean) mid-30s. A doctor, about to become a board-certified pediatric neurologist. Control freak.
FATHER—Asian (Korean) 50s. Must speak Korean. A professor. Keeps it together for the family. Emotionally clueless.
MOTHER –Asian (Korean) 50s. In a deep depression. Gardening fanatic and HGTV addict.
MRS. LEE/OLD MAN IN COAT/OFFICIAL/NURSE/MR. KWON/KIM JONG IL/ GRANDMOTHER TIGER/ VOICE/GRANDMOTHER—Asian (Korean) Male or Female. Must speak Korean. Transformational.
DANG—Asian (Korean), 20s. A recent graduate and professional slacker. He has-a-band-sort-of. Good kid.
GIRL—Asian, (Korean) 20s. An activist in search of a cause. Used-to-have-a-band-sort-of. Blunt.
