Richard Apple:
CAST. Male, 30s-40s. Lawyer working at office of NY’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo. Lives in Albany; appears to be a solitary existence. Creates conflict with his family, who all live in the small town of Rhinebeck, NY. Somewhat emotionally closed off, and resists his sisters’ attempts to get him to open up and be a more active figure in their lives.
Barbara Apple:
CAST. Female, 30s-40s. Richard’s sister, a high school English teacher in Rhinebeck. Keeps up with current events; finds creative ways to engage her students with the world around them and with the past. Can be tad controlling, but for the right reasons; namely, the well-being of Uncle Benjamin and Richard’s distant lifestyle.
Marian Apple:
CAST. Female, 30s-40s. Richard’s sister, a longtime resident of Rhinebeck and third grade teacher. Still struggling with the suicide of her daughter, Evan, the previous year; now pledged herself to take care of her estranged husband, Adam, who is dying of cancer. Her commitment to this task surprises even her.
Jane Apple:
CAST. Female, 30s-40s. Richard’s sister, a nonfiction writer who has recently moved back to Rhinebeck. Full of ideas for potential writing projects, but doesn’t seem to see very many of them through to completion. Continues to encourage her long-term boyfriend Tim’s acting career, even when he himself seems to have given up.
Benjamin Apple:
CAST. Male, 60s-70s. Richard’s uncle, a retired actor with a legendary career in theatre, film and TV behind him. Losing memory and awareness of what’s happening around him, but still has flashes of brilliance. Lives partly at a nursing home and partly with his nieces in Rhinebeck. Takes their doting in stride.
Tim Andrews:
CAST. Male, 30s-40s. Struggling actor; has moved to Rhinebeck with long-term girlfriend Jane. Full of fascinating factoids and anecdotes; intent on learning the history of Rhinebeck in order to be a better citizen there. Jane tries to convince him to take up acting again, but he seems reluctant.

John Halder:
CAST. Male, 40s. German literature professor, critic, and novelist. By all outward appearances a smart, compassionate man who lives a morally upright life, but is prone to moments of weakness and vanity.
Maurice:
CAST. Male, 40s. Jewish Psychiatrist; Maurice’s best friend. Considers Germany his home. Initially laughs the Nazis off, but becomes increasingly frantic and desperate as they take control of Germany.
Major (Freddie):
Male, 40s. Nazi major in who becomes a close friend of Halder. Committed to Nazi party, but willing to bend the rules for his own benefit.
Elizabeth:
Female, 40’s. Freddie’s devoted wife, who becomes friends with Halder and Anne.
Helen:
Female, Late 30s. Halder’s wife. Constantly frazzled & unable to take care of herself and her home.
Mother:
ROLE CAST. Female, Elderly. Halder’s elderly mother. Left blind by a coma, relies completely on Halder to manage her most basic needs.
Anne:
Female, Early 20s. One of Halder’s students; very beautiful. Deeply infatuated with Halder; becomes his lover and soon lives with him. At first disgusted by the Nazis’ anti-Semitism, her stance changes to passive acceptance.
Eichmann:
Male, 40-50’s. Nazi Over-Leader and organizer of the Holocaust who sends Halder to inspect Auschwitz. Real historical figure. (Doubled with Bouller)
Bouller:
Male, 40-50’s. Refined, courteous Nazi Over-Leader who first reaches out to Halder regarding the Nazis’ euthanasia program. Real historical figure. (Doubles with Eichmann)
Doctor:
Male. Doctor in the S.S. Seeks Halder’s advice in efficiently launching a Nazi euthanasia program. (Doubled with Dispatch Rider)
Dispatch Rider:
Male. Nazi messenger; brings dramatic news to Halder. (Doubled with Doctor)
Bok:
Male. Officer in the S.S. in charge of finding books to be burned. (Doubled with Hitler)
Hitler:
Male. Leader of the Nazis and, in the time-frame of the play, all of Germany. Real historical figure. (Doubled with Bok)
Musicians:
Band of musicians that plays the music Halder constantly hears in his head.

Golda Meir:
CAST. Female, 70s. 4th Prime Minister of Israel. Simultaneously hopeful idealist & iron-willed world leader; works for decades to bring state of Israel into being, then finds herself called to fight for its survival. Deeply passionate about the global Jewish struggle; uncompromising leader who is willing to confront international juggernauts like Nixon and Kissinger in order to secure the future of her people.

THE GIFT HORSE

1st reh: 4/4/17. Runs 4/22-5/14/17.
Ruth:
Female, African American, 26-30. Personable, charming, if somewhat neurotic. Has great sense of humor and laughs easily. Smart, socially aware. Talented painter but initially pushes her artistic affinity aside to focus on more practical disciplines. A traumatic incident in her past has left her emotional life unsteady.
Brian:
Male, African American, 40-50. Handsome, serious, warm, caring. Psychologist who likes working one on one with patients. As Ruth’s therapist, he is firm and compassionate, and guides her towards resolving past hardships.
Ernesto:
Male, Latino, 27-30. Intelligent, warm, charismatic, and sexy, with barely detectable Spanish accent, if at all. Ruth’s best friend; he provides emotional support for her and, in addition, depends on her compassion when his life takes an unfortunate turn.
Bill:
Male, White, 30-45. Dangerously attractive and engaging. Bill seems to have it all: money, charisma, a broad range of skills and life experiences, but he seems too good to be true. Something about him makes Ruth uneasy.
Noah:
Male, Latino, 27-30. Ernesto’s eventual soulmate. Gentle, warm, loving, intelligent. Has glimmer of wicked humor, but loves Ernesto deeply and is committed to him.
Jordan:
Female, African American, 23-27. Young, pretty, and personable. Somewhat more centered than Ruth, though still charming and engaging. Must relate to the audience with ease and warmth. Has lived life full of travel and experience, and has exceptional musical talent. Plays cello throughout course of the play.

Thurgood Marshall:
CAST. Male, 60s-70s. First African-American Justice to serve on Supreme Court. Witty and sharp; full of stories from his landmark legal career and is able to find a glimmer of hope and humor in even the darkest situations. A hard worker and family man, though early in his career he sometimes struggled to balance these two sides of himself. Recognizes the imperfections of modern America, but hopeful that the law can be a potent weapon in the fight for equal rights.

This music/theatre revue showcases Bertolt Brecht’s personal writings and political ideologies alongside excerpts from his most popular artistic collaborations.
There are four roles available: 2 men and 2 women of any age.
