JENNA
Female. A talented pie-maker who works at a diner in a small town. She is kind-hearted, but often feels trapped in her difficult marriage with her controlling and abusive husband, Earl. Jenna dreams of a better life, and her escape comes through baking pies and her unexpected pregnancy.
Age: 20s-30s. Mezzo-Soprano.
DR. POMATTER
Male. Mild-mannered, awkward gynecologist who becomes Jenna’s love interest. Dr. Pomatter is charming in his awkwardness, and he develops a bond with Jenna and they have an affair. He is sweet and caring but also somewhat clueless in his personal life.
Age: 30s-40s. Tenor.
EARL
Male. Jenna’s abusive and possessive husband. He is the source of much of Jenna’s misery at the start of the story, controlling and emotionally manipulative. Earl is not completely malicious, but his insecurities lead him to act in harmful ways.
Age: 30s-40s. Baritone.
CAL
Male. The owner and manager of Joe's Diner. He is tense and has somewhat of an antagonistic relationship with Jenna as well as with some of the other staff. Cal is gruff, impatient, and controlling. Despite his rough exterior, there are moments in the musical that hint at his own vulnerabilities or softer side.
Age: 30s-40s. Tenor.
JOE
Male. A regular customer at the diner. He is wise, kind, and serves as a kind of surrogate father figure to Jenna. Joe has a gentle, caring presence and offers Jenna advice and support when she needs it most.
Age: 60s-80s. Tenor.
NICK BOTTOM
Male. An aspiring playwright who is frustrated with his lack of success. He is desperate to outdo Shakespeare and create the next big thing in theater. Nick is driven by his desire to succeed, even if it means resorting to extreme measures. Ambitious, jealous, determined, but also somewhat clueless. He loves his family but often gets carried away in his pursuit of fame. Taps.
Age: 30s-40s. Bari-tenor.
BEA
Female. Nick’s wife and “Right Hand Man”. She loves and supports him despite his questionable decision making and lack of success. Bea resorts to dressing up like a male to make ends meet for her growing family. She is a strong leader and a powerful woman who is quite persuasive when she wants to be. She ultimately saves the day. Comedic.
Age: 20s-40s. Alto.
SHAKESPEARE
Male. The famous playwright and rival to the Bottom brothers. Shakespeare is depicted as an egotistical rock star of the Elizabethan theater scene, boasting of his talent and allure. While he's undeniably talented, he is also self-centered and somewhat pretentious. Arrogant, charming, flashy, and full of himself with a modern, rock-star swagger. Taps.
Age: 30s-40s. Tenor.
NOSTRADAMUS (CAST)
Male. A mysterious character who provides Nick with a vision of the future. In this vision, Nick sees Shakespeare’s eventual decline and is given the idea to create the first-ever musical (which he believes will be the next big trend). Mysterious, all-knowing, and slightly eccentric.
Age: 50s-70s. Tenor.
MARTIN – (Age: 30s-50s) Leading Man, Baritone
JASON – (Age: 20s-40s) Comic Juvenile, Tenor
LYNNE – (Age: 30s-50s) Leading Lady, Soprano
VICKI – (Age: 20s-40s) Comic Ingenue, Second Soprano
POLLY BAKER (CAST)
A spunky, strong-willed girl who works at the rundown theater in Nevada. She is not impressed by Bobby at first, as she believes he’s there to close her theater, but she eventually falls for him. Polly is a determined and independent woman who loves the theater.
Age: 20s. Mezzo-soprano.
BOBBY CHILD
A wealthy, charming young man, initially working for his mother’s bank. He dreams of being a Broadway dancer and goes to Nevada to foreclose on a theater. There, he falls in love with Polly Baker. Bobby is energetic, comic, and extremely romantic, a dreamer who wants more out of life than the bank job he’s been saddled with. NOTE: Tap skills needed.

BELA ZANGLER
The Hungarian impresario who runs a theater in New York City. Bela is an eccentric and flamboyant character, often comedic, who serves as the show's comic foil. He has an over-the-top personality and a penchant for dramatic flair.
Age: 30s-40s. Baritone.
JOSEPH PULITZER
The wealthy and ruthless publisher of the World newspaper. He is the antagonist of the musical and the main figure the newsboys are fighting against. Pulitzer is the embodiment of corporate greed and exploitation. He attempts to crush the newsies' strike by any means necessary.
Age: 40s-60s. Baritone.
KATHERINE PLUMBER
Female identifying. A strong-willed, independent reporter who wants to make a name for herself in a male-dominated industry. She becomes an ally to the newsies and helps bring their story to the public. Katherine’s role is pivotal in providing the newsboys with media exposure, thus helping their strike gain traction. She develops a romantic connection with Jack. Tap skills needed.
Age: 20s-30s. Mezzo-soprano.
MEDDA LARKIN
African-American, female identifying. A vaudeville performer and friend to the newsboys. Medda is a kind, larger-than-life character who offers the newsies support when they need it most. Medda is a supportive ally, offering Jack and his friends a place to stay and a voice of encouragement.
Age: 30s-40s. Mezzo-soprano.
