The York Theatre Company's acclaimed Musicals in Mufti Series (and recent recipient of an Obie Awards Grant) returns to The York, this season celebrating the centennial of legendary librettist and lyricist ALAN JAY LERNER (Brigadoon, Camelot, Love Life, and My Fair Lady). The series will include:


CARMELINA

In a picturesque Italian village, Carmelina has raised her teenage daughter to believe her father was an American who died heroically in World War II—all the while collecting child support checks from three American soldiers, each of whom thinks he is the girl’s father. Complications arise when all three soldiers show up at the same time for a reunion. Even though the original Broadway production only ran for 17 performances, the lush Lerner and Lane score received a 1979 Tony Award nomination for Best Score (losing to Sondheim's Sweeney Todd). The version of Carmelina presented here is the revised version created by Joseph Stein, Burton Lane, and Lerner protégé Barry Harman for The York in 1996, then further revised for a second Mufti presentation ten years later.

[SIGNORA CARMELINA CAMPBELL] Female, late 30s - early 40s. Beautiful, smart, reserved until her passionate is ignited. Gia’s mother, she is an independent, vivacious Italian woman who has dubbed herself “Mrs. Campbell” to hide the identity of Gia’s father. Mezzo.

[VITTORIO DELA MARTA/(EDUARDO)] Male, Early 40s. The most eligible bachelor in San Forino, consumed by his passion for Carmelina and determined to win her over. Charming and attractive, but not quite as suave as he thinks he is. Baritone.

[GIA CAMPBELL/(HOSTESS)] Female, Carmelina's daughter, 18+ to play 16. Sweet and lovely ingenue, but like her mother, when she sets her mind to something, there’s no dissuading her. Soprano.

[ROSA/(COOK)] Female, Carmelina's maid, around 50-ish. Devoted, outspoken and funny. A good friend, with an opinion. Great comic role. Mezzo.

[WALTER BRADDOCK/(WAITER)] Male, late 30’s - mid 40’s. a little portly, good-natured. American; a former G.I. Had an affair with Carmelina during WWII and is possibly Gia’s father. Strong singer, adept with harmony.

[STEVE KARZINSKI/(WAITER)] Male, late 30’s - mid 40’s. Probably an ex-jock, the guy you’d like to have around in a tight spot. American; a former G.I. Had an affair with Carmelina during WWII and is possibly Gia’s father. Strong singer, adept with harmony.

[CARLETON SMITH/(WAITER)] Male, late 30’s - early 40’s. A successful businessman, handsome, perhaps even dashing. American; a former G.I. Had an affair with Carmelina during WWII and is possibly Gia’s father. Strong singer, adept with harmony.

[ROBERTO/(GUITARIST)] Male, 20s. A young Italian man in love with Gia. Good natured and determined. Must also play guitar well. Strong singer.

A married woman attends a college reunion where she meets the man with whom she almost eloped ten years before. Romantically stirred by a novel he has written about her, she considers leaving her husband and reuniting with her former flame. With a score that was never recorded, moments of The Day Before Spring served as inspiration for such Lerner and Loewe classics as Gigi and My Fair Lady. This production will feature all of the songs from the original score after recently being discovered for a 2010 UK production.
This will mark the first hearing of the original score in New York since it closed on Broadway in 1946!

[ALEX RUTLAND] Male, approximately 30, any ethnicity, successful author, tall, athletic, attractive, charismatic. When he speaks he seems to put sincerity in every word he says. (Baritenor)

[GERALD BARKER] Male, late 20s-mid 30s, any ethnicity, Asst. to Alex, confidante, “go between”, keeper of the appointment book. Will also be part of the ensemble.

Based on the 1955 novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Lolita, My Love, which originally closed in Boston in 1971, closely follows the legendary novel: a college professor named Humbert Humbert becomes fascinated by and starts to seduce his landlady's young daughter, Dolores Lolita Haze. The fascination quickly turns into obsession, and soon a whirlwind race across the US begins. For this Mufti presentation, Erik Haagensen has created a new script, edited together from Lerner’s assorted drafts, each vastly different from the others.
