BREAKDOWN
George Hay (40s – 50s). An overly dramatic actor – often a ham - with significant talent but aging out of the leading man roles he built a career on. He leads his own acting troupe with his wife. Jealous of those who are more successful than him, he always had aspirations of film stardom. He can be pompous and overbearing. Sometimes he drinks too much. He is a large presence in any room – both physically and vocally. He fancies himself a ladies man but is really devoted to his wife Charlotte. Must be able to do strong physical comedy.
Charlotte Hay (40-50s). Very attractive leading lady, a larger than life drama queen who plays all the leads – even the ones she is now a bit too old to do. She was a Broadway star who now tours the country helping her husband run a beleaguered acting troupe. She has dreams of being a film star – but those dreams are fading. She cares deeply for her family and her husband (even though he is a part time philanderer). Must be able to do strong physical comedy and upper-class British accent.
Ethel (60s-70s). Charlotte’s mother who is almost completely deaf, grumpy, and a trouble-maker. A former star actress who now tours with Charlotte and George’s acting troupe. She is not pleased with her daughter’s choice of a husband. She doesn’t take crap from anyone and her hard-of-hearing issues lead to great comic misunderstanding. At times is very witty. Must have strong comedic skills.
Rosalind (Roz), (20s-30s). George and Charlotte’s daughter. She used to be an actress in the troupe but does not want to follow in the family business – or be like her parents. So she left, determined never to act again. Sweet, attractive, thinks she knows what she wants – but maybe not. She is pursuing a “new” life with a new fiancé – Howard, a weatherman. She used to be in love with Paul – an actor in her parents troupe. Must be able to do an upper-class British accent.
Howard (20s-30s). Rosalind’s fiancé – a weatherman – so he considers himself to be in the “acting” business. His is handsome, good-natured and a bit awkward. When he gets nervous – which is often – he can get very excitable. Must be able to do strong physical comedy.
Eileen (20’s). An aspiring actress in the touring company of George and Charlotte. She is their ingénue. She is very attractive, eager to please, and can seem a bit flighty and naïve at times. But often gets what she wants and knows how to manipulate men. She has a crush on George and has an affair with him.
Paul (30’s). He is Rosalind’s former love interest, he still loves her, and wants her back. But he has been with the troupe for a long time and would not leave to be with her – he wants to follow in George’s footsteps and be a successful actor. He is a leading man type with a subtle sense of humor. He is also the Company Manager and often acts as the glue to the company. Must be able to do strong physical comedy. Must be able to do an upper-class British accent.
Richard (50’s). A lawyer to the stars – including George and Charlotte. Richard has always been in love with Charlotte and is always trying to get Charlotte to run away with him. He is wealthy, arrogant and used to getting what he wants.
