BREAKDOWN

Maria Callas, La Divina, is a glamorous, commanding, caustic, and quite unexpectedly funny pedagogue – but she’s not so much teaching a Master Class as she’s urgently (if not viciously) struggling to transform young Opera protégés into something more than they ever thought they’d be. Pushing them to desire more than mere celebrity and fame. Forcing them to create “art” with every note, as she did. But to achieve this goal, Callas is forced to reveal more about her life than she may be willing to share…and a past she might not be ready to face.

Maria Callas: a formidable woman in her late 40s/early 50s, commanding and larger-than-life, with an acerbic wit – but shattered and vulnerable as she truly reveals herself to us. The only singing required is described in the script as a “cracked and broken voice in ruins.”

Sophie De Palma (Soprano): Female, 20s; talented soprano, sensitive but courageous, and not afraid to ask questions. Performer must be a strong operatic soprano. Must be able to sing Ah! non credea mirarti, Amina's aria from La Sonnambula and must able to realistically cry on cue.

Sharon Graham (Soprano): Female, 20s, talented soprano, sensitive but courageous, not afraid to ask questions, works very hard. Must be able to sing Nel dì della vittoria, Lady Macbeth’s aria from Verdi’s Macbeth (both the Aria and Cabaletta).

Anthony “Tony” Candolino (Tenor): Male, 20s to early 30s, tenor, attractive and flirtatious, confident verging on cocky and serious about becoming an artist. Performer must be a strong operatic tenor. Must be able to sing Dammi i colori, Cavaradossi’s aria from Puccini's Tosca.

Manny Weinstock (Accompanist): Male, 20s to early 30s, accomplished actor and accompanist, smart, savvy, good-humored and kind-hearted artist. Respects Callas. Performer must play piano (very well) – especially the arias listed above – and must sing well enough to sing a few lines while he’s playing here and there (especially the role of the servant during the cabaletta of Lady Macbeth’s aria).

Stagehand: Male, late 20’s, nonplussed, unfazed, college student with a “lamb-to-the-slaughter” sort of innocence.
