BREAKDOWN
CURIOUS GEORGE
By John Kavanaugh and Jeremy Desmon
Director/Choreographer: Matthew Sipress
Music Director: Mary Brozina Wierick
First Rehearsal: January 8, 2019
Opening: January 23, 2019
Closing: February 17, 2019
CURIOUS GEORGE – Male – a lovable, innocent monkey that always seems to get into trouble. Curious, and often this curiosity gets him into situations that he has to figure a way out. Seeking actors with strong physical acting abilities. Dancing, mime, juggling, and acrobatics are a plus.
A Note about Curious George: CURIOUS GEORGE never speaks, but “chitters.” Chitters are vocalized sounds that convey intentions and sentiment of words, in close to the same number of syllables as are scripted, with the right acting inflection, without actually saying the words. If you start with the words on the page, remove the consonants, and in a higher, youthful voice, click the sound a bit toward “monkey” and away from “human” (raising the back of the tongue a bit), you’ll find the right “chitter.” We strongly recommend the actor familiarize themselves with George’s “chittering” and personality by watching the Curious George animated series which is available online.
MAN IN THE YELLOW HAT – Male – Bari Tenor – a kind, loving person who has a very nurturing relationship with George. Their relationship is positive and supportive. Must believably portray an adult/mentor figure in comparison to George.
CHEF PISGHETTI – Male (Italian Accent) – High Baritone – a kind, well intentioned Italian Chef who knows how to make great meatballs! Loves cooking and committed to providing the highest quality dining experience. A great friend to George.
PHINNEAS – Male – Tenor – a fast-talking salesperson who has invented a meatball making machine.
NETTI – Female (Italian Accent) – Soprano Belt – Netti is Chef Pisghetti’s trusty assistant chef. Warm, generous, and a dutiful assistant to the Chef.
DOORMAN – Female – Alto Belt – a doorperson at an apartment building on N Avenue. Always willing to help in any situation, and get very involved in helping George to succeed at winning the meatball contest.
All actors, except the actor playing ‘George,’ will also play Cooks, Painters, Delivery People, etc. Seeking an engaging and playful actors to play various roles. Must be able to play various extremes with a quick turnover. Strong comedic timing is a must.

Opening: July 9, 2019

JACK KELLY - Male, 16-23, (Bb2-A4). The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior,
Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability – especially when it comes to bantering with a certain female reporter. Must have a great pop tenor voice and sense of physicality.
CRUTCHIE - Male, 13-17, (C3-A4) A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papers. Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance. Though his movement will suggest his bum leg, Crutchie should still be included in the dance numbers.
DAVEY - Male, 15-23, (D3-A4) Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others, Davey is the brains of the resistance.
KATHERINE PLUMER - Female, 17-23, (A3-F5). An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourceful, she boldly captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. While she generally has no time for cocky, streetwise young men, she makes an exception for Jack Kelly. Though she only has a brief dance solo in “King of New York,” Katherine should have a great contemporary pop voice with a high belt – diction is key.
JOSEPH PULITZER - Male, 35-50, (C3-F4).A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack.
MEDDA LARKIN - Female, 25-45, (F3-E5) Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice.
