Breakdown

PLEASE NOTE: This play takes place in London. All characters have British accents.

Seeking:

LINDA:
55. A career woman who has had it all. A pioneer in cosmetics marketing, husband, two daughters, beautiful house. Accomplished, polished, and driven. Charming with a great sense of humor, but also a tendency to ignore what she doesn’t want to hear. Fighting for her professional life, she is slow to notice that her personal life is also falling apart.

ALICE:
25. Linda’s older daughter, from previous marriage. A smart, pretty young woman who is mostly shut down in the aftermath of a trauma from her teenage years. Makes an effort to hide her looks, sleeps a lot, takes an internship at her mother’s company under duress. Caustically funny and filled with contempt.

BRIDGET:
15. Linda’s younger daughter, from her current marriage. Curious, opinionated, anxious not to be ordinary. Fighting for attention from her self-involved family.

AMY:
25. The new marketing exec at Linda’s company. Young, beautiful, ambitious, entitled. Always on trend, always saying the right thing to the right person. Very successful. Driven to be on top, and will fight to get there.

NEIL:
54. Linda’s husband. A good enough guy, but self-involved and distracted. Lives in the shadow of his wife’s high flying career and has made a comfortable place there, letting her take care of everything. He can disconnect without making waves. Has taken up rock music as a hobby.

STEVIE:
28. Female. An aspiring musician. Good-natured, but a bit lost, a bit damaged. Living hand-to-mouth in the way young artists do. Craves attention and stability.

LUKE:
30. A temp. Charming, sexy, utterly uninvested in his work. Saving money to join a group of “Free Thinkers” in Bali, but he may as well have some fun in the meantime. Not a serious person, but there’s a conscience in there somewhere.

DAVE:
60. Linda’s boss. They go way back. Masculine, executive, alpha. He tries to hide behind his professionalism as the work situation with Linda gets increasingly awkward, but it can only mask his frustration so much.
