BREAKDOWN
LEWISTON
MARNIE: (Female. Early to mid twenties). Grounded, strong, and fiercely intelligent, but masking an inner anxiety and desire to reconnect with her grandmother. Growing up in Seattle with an alcoholic father, she learned to be mature and self-sufficient from an early age, and uses a gruff exterior and resolute single-mindedness to achieve her goals. Caucasian.
ALICE: (Female Early to mid seventies) Marnie’s grandmother whom she hasn’t seen since she was a small girl. Living on a plot of land on the outskirts of a small town in Idaho her entire life, her exterior is self-reliant, brusque, and argumentative, under which lies a deep well of pain. Caucasian.
CONNOR (Male Fifties) Alice’s long-time friend and roommate. An essentially optimistic and well-meaning presence, the son of a preacher and a life long butcher slash taxidermist, he’s more or less hidden his sexuality from friends and family most of his life. While Marnie and Alice spar, he desperately tries to keep the peace, holding out faith that there’s a chance for grandmother and granddaughter to reconnect. Any race/ethnicity.
RECORDED FEMALE VOICE: (Female thirties/forties). Marnie's mother and Alice's daughter. Shortly before committing suicide, she went on a massive hike to retrace the steps taken by her relative Meriwether Lewis on his excursion west, and throughout the play we hear selections of tapes she recorded during her journey. She's resilient, warm, and extremely-well spoken, but her enthusiasm masks a deep well of pain and psychological turmoil. Note: This is a recorded voice. Actor hired will be hired under a 2-week AEA contract.
CLARKSON
CHRIS – (Male, Twenties.) Tall and broad, night shift employee at a Costco in the small western city of Clarkston, Washington. An aspiring writer who dreams of making it out of his home town and seeing the rest of the world. Reserved, guarded, and fiercely protective of his mother. Caucasian.
JAKE – (Male Early to mid-twenties.) Smaller in stature than Chris, he grew up in an affluent family in Connecticut and is a recent graduate of an expensive liberal arts college. Recently diagnosed with an incurable disease, he has ventured out West in order to find himself and re-connect with his roots. Outgoing and out-of-the-closet, he stands in stark contrast to Chris. Any race/ethnicity.
TRISHA – (Female forties – fifties) Chris’ mom. She has been struggling with methamphetamine addiction most of her life, but has been clean for several months and is currently employed full-time at the local Denny’s. She is desperate to make her way back into Chris’ life by showing him that she has turned over a new leaf. Acerbic but genuine. Caucasian.
