BREAKDOWN
Synopsis: A nervous 29 year-old starlet (Nancy Davis) went on a dinner date to Chasen’s restaurant with movie star (and then president of SAG) Ronald Reagan. There was an attraction, and this was the beginning of several dates over the next 2 years. They confide in each other, turn up the heat, bicker, rage against the gossipy press, and even battle the threat of Communism. The drama is in how Nancy plays hard to get, and how long it takes Ron to propose.
NANCY – Nancy Davis, at age 29, before she got married and became Nancy Reagan. Trim, petite, and ladylike. Has a warm heart and a lovely, genuine laugh when amused, but is prone to worrying and over-thinking. Likes everything just so. Sincere and pure-hearted, so not very good at Hollywood game-playing. Smarter, sassier and more ambitious than she seems at first glance. Turns ice-cold if hurt or offended. She would very much like to get married. Preferably to Ron. Mezzo G3-E5 (G below middle C to E in the staff). Standard pop songs, in standard pop keys.
RON – Ronald Reagan at age 39, while he was still an actor. Matinee-idol handsome, tall, and solidly built. A true mid-western farm boy, he loves riding horses and working on his ranch. Uncomplicated. Means what he says and says what he means. Genial and quick with a joke, he keeps his feelings to himself. He’s not the world’s deepest thinker, but he’s intelligent, well-read, and good at getting people to do things. Right now, he’s good at keeping Nancy in his life without having to marry her. Lyric Baritone B2 to G4 (2nd B below Middle C, to G above Middle C). Standard pop songs, in standard pop keys.
