SYNOPSIS: HARD ROAD TO HEAVEN is an authentic country musical about a family that starts out singing in the southern gospel circuit. As one becomes the reigning queen of country music, the family confronts the challenges of the fast-paced male-dominated music business and its effect on their lives.
NOTE: Seeking strong, contemporary vocalists in all roles.
JENNY DIXON: Female, 30s. The reigning Queen of Country Music. Sharp, witty. Strong and vulnerable. Determined as hell and doesn’t let anyone push her around. Tough on the outside, soft on the inside. BELTER
LINNELL DIXON: Female, late 50s-60. Jenny’s mother. Retreated to the church after her early attempts at country music stardom. Values being a good Christian woman - and determined to keep her family together. Fiercely protective of her daughters. Lots of bark, some bite. ALTO
ANNA GRACE DIXON: Female, 18+ to play 10 and 17. Jenny’s sister. Every bit the young hipster. Brilliant, heading to Yale - but wants to be a singer/songwriter instead. Cynical, sarcastic. More Billie Eilish than country music. SOPRANO BELTER
HANK DIXON: Male, early 50s-60s. Jenny’s father. Warm, loving, and supportive. More laid-back and easy-going than Linnell. BARITONE
CHARLIE MORGAN: Male, Black, 60s. Longtime friend of Hank. Owner of a small gospel record label. Has a great ear for locating exciting new talent. Jenny’s manager. BARITONE
JIMMY LEE STANLEY: Male, late 30s. Jenny’s old flame. Once a preacher, now in real estate. Sweet and charming. TENOR
KELLIN WAYNE: Male, 30s-40s. Rising record company executive. Slick, sexy, oozes charm while clearly on the make. TENOR
MARCUS DORSEY: Male, Black, 19. An up-and-coming music producer and musician working with Anna Grace. Smart, funny, and happy to let Anna Grace take the lead. TENOR
YOUNG JIMMY LEE & OTHERS: Male, 20s. Young Jimmy Lee plus others. TENOR
YOUNG JENNY & OTHERS: Female, 20s. Young Jenny Dixon plus others. Tough-as-nails star on the rise. Rebellious, vivacious, and ready to leave her family behind. ALTO
SONNY & OTHERS: White male, late 20s. Sonny is a rising, hot, good ole' boy country star plus others. BARITONE
