SYNOPSIS:

Upside Down imagines a world where stereotypical and sociological norms are reversed. It's a world where women dominate the living. Nothing is what it seems - including the theater. Jack and Robert are a moderately successful pair of writers who dream of one day writing a Broadway show but are hampered by their formulaic 'boy meets boy, boy loses boy, boy gets boy back again' plots. They're convinced that the only way to get a Broadway show is to write something edgy, something anti-mainstream, something which hasn't been done before...namely, a 'straight' musical. Upside Down is a romantic musical comedy with a bite. It attempts to shine a spotlight on those who ostracize and criticize if the tables were reversed.

Seeking:

  • Jack Tanner – Male, late 20s/30s, baritenor, any ethnicity. A musical theater book writer aspiring to create a hit Broadway show. An affable yet slightly unaware good guy, Jack is ultimately faced with questions of his own sexuality he hasn't wrestled with before.
  • Robert Lyons – Male, late 20s/30s, baritenor, any ethnicity. A musical theater composer aspiring to write a hit Broadway show. The more flashy of the duo, Robert can let his emotions run wild but is also the man you want by your side in a crisis, creative or otherwise. NOTE: Piano playing ability a definite plus.
  • Tammy – Female, late 20s/30s, strong belt/mix, any ethnicity. A lovely and spirited singer at The Straight Arrow bar. Originally from Tennessee, she's high on talent but down on her luck with finding Mr. Right. Regardless, her optimism never flags.
  • Maggie Burns – Female, 30s/40s, strong belt/mix, any ethnicity. Jack and Robert’s quick-thinking, fast-talking agent who will stop at nothing to get her boys a hit.
  • Robin Bird – Female, 40s/50s, strong belt/mix, any ethnicity. A top producer of the Broadway stage. Robin is rich, unscrupulous, and power-hungry.
  • Jane Tannenbaum/President Grant – Female, 40s, strong belt/mix, any ethnicity. Jane is New York's most influential theater critic at the New York Times. President Grant is the powerful woman leading our country. She's in a relationship with General Howe, though they try to keep their work separate, secret, and professional. President Grant is on a mission to protect her policy and stop Jack and Robert’s Broadway show from opening. NOTE: Will most likely internally cover the role of General Howe.
  • General Howe – Female, 30s/40s, strong belt/mix, any ethnicity. General Howe is in a relationship with the President, though they try to keep their work separate, secret, and professional. A strong, by-the-book yes-woman. NOTE: Will most likely internally cover the role of Robin.
  • Lou Smalls – Male, 40s-60s, baritone, global majority. A television anchor at FUX-TV. He hosts “Shut ‘em Down,” a one-hour look at the top news stories of the day - and how we can shut ‘em down.
  • Pastor Jake – Male, late 20s/30s, baritenor, any ethnicity. A nationally-acclaimed Pastor whose beliefs and devotion to the faith never falter. NOTE: Will most likely internally cover the role of Robert.
  • Eugene – Male, late 20s/30s, baritenor, any ethnicity. Eugene is madly in love with Tammy, who reminds him of his mother. He really, really loves his mother. His stalker tendencies with Tammy are mostly harmless but very relentless. Eugene is rich, not all that bright, and wears his heart on his sleeve. NOTE: Will most likely internally cover the role of Jack.
  • Male Identifying Ensemble – 20s/30s, any ethnicity. One ensemble member to play various roles including half of a Broadway song and dance team, patrons, denizens of New York, and more. Excellent singer, dancer, character actor. Tapping ability a plus. NOTE: Will also most likely internally cover Eugene and Lou.
  • Female Identifying Ensemble – 20s/30s, any ethnicity. One ensemble member to play various roles including half of a Broadway song and dance team, patrons, denizens of New York, Mandy, Alexa, and more. Excellent singer, dancer, character actor. Tapping ability a plus. NOTE: Will also most likely internally cover Tammy and Maggie.
