BREAKDOWN

ORIENTAL by Evren Odcikin

Workshop Presentation part of New Threads Reading Series:

Rehearsal begins: 5/27
Performances: 6/7 and 6/8

SYNOPSIS

Kaan has been commissioned to make an adaptation of 1001 Nights from a Very Important Theater Company, and asked to bring his immigrant, Muslim, queer perspective to it. Unfortunately, he is not sure what all that means. As his characters revolt and refuse to tell the stories that he requires of them, can Kaan face his demons, change the minds and hearts of his audience, and save all the women of the kingdom in the process? ORIENTAL is an absurdist look at the hilarious knots SWANA creatives must tie themselves in to tell their stories and make a career in the American theatre.

SEEKING

KAAN KURBAN: 30s-40s. Queer male. An immigrant to the U.S. from Turkey. Grew up secular Muslim. Doubles as the voice of the KING puppet, which is an absurd stereotype of an oppressive Middle Eastern man.

LAYLA NOOR SLEIMAN: 40s-50s. She/Her. Born and raised in Egypt. A leading scholar of A Thousand and One Nights. O-1 Visa holder. Speaks English with an accent.

ZAINAB BROWN ABBASI: 30s-40s. She/Her. Born in the U.S. to a Pakistani immigrant father and a white European-American mother. A one-time performer, she now teaches kindergarten. Married to a man and has a son.

MONA HADDAD: 20s-30s. She/Her. Born in New Jersey to Arab parents from mixed Christian and Muslim background. An activist and connected to BIPOC groups and political solidarity movements.

ART MONEY WOMAN: 40+. She/Her. White. Artistic Director who commissioned this thing. She is busy, busy, busy. She grew up in a rich family likely in the Northeast and feels really comfortable getting her way. She loudly showcases her liberal values as it serves her purposes. She has a soft spot for statement jewelry. Doubles as: VOICE: White female American. All powerful. Polished, polite — and sometimes threatening. Think Security Siri. DIRECTOR OF NEW WORKS: Hardworking, nerdy, and kind. Well-meaning. She loves to name how she has NO power whatsoever, although she clearly does. Likely has floral tattoos and wears thick framed glasses.

THE RETURN by Hanna Eady and Edward Mast

Rehearsals begin: July 1 (20 hours per week)
Performances: July – August 24

SYNOPSIS

THE RETURN is a one-act, 70-minute play that starts simply with two people meeting in an auto-body shop in the mid-sized city Herzliya. They might or might not have known each other in the past. One of them is Palestinian, one of them is Israeli Jewish, and by the end of the play, both of their lives will be changed forever by the realities that surround them.

SEEKING

HIM: Late 30s to early 40s, a person of color. Sharp, focused, composed and humble, avoiding negative stereotypes of an Arab man. Ideally clean-shaven, with no facial hair.
