STORYLINE:
GARSIDE’S CAREER, by Harold Brighouse, tells the story of a mechanical engineer who has the drive to better himself by earning his B.A. degree, urged on by his fiancé. On the day he passes his exams, they begin to make plans for their wedding. They are interrupted when he is unexpectedly coaxed into filling a sudden opening as the Labour candidate for Parliament, thanks to his gifts as an orator. Mint’s production of GARSIDE’S CAREER will be the New York Premiere. The play had an extended run in Boston in 1919 (“admirable in construction, realistic in characterization, bright in wit and keen in satire”) and a New York production was announced, but never happened. Even in the U.K., this bright, witty political satire seems to have completely disappeared.
NOTE ABOUT DIALECT:
Most of the cast speaks with a Lancashire dialect. The three members of the Mottram family are also Lancashire natives, and though they are not aristocratic, they do speak R.P. (Received Pronunciation). Mr. Denis O’Callaghan speaks with an Irish dialect.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:
Harold Brighouse is best known for his comedy HOBSON’S CHOICE, written a few years after GARSIDE and made immortal by David Lean’s 1954 film starring Charles Laughton as the bootmaker Hobson. Brighouse is one of a few authors associated with the “Manchester School” so named for their association with the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester run by Annie Horniman. Other “Manchester School” plays first presented by Horniman at the Gaiety and later at the Mint include MARY BROOME by Allan Monkhouse (2011) and HINDLE WAKES by Stanley Houghton (2017).
PETER GARSIDE (Male, 20s - early 30s, open ethnicity) A working-class engineer who achieves great success as a politician, only to fall prey to ego and ambition. A charming idealist and silver-tongued orator, who believes in himself as much as the cause.
MRS. GARSIDE (Female, 50s - 60s, open ethnicity) A working-class woman who has grinded all of her life. She scoffs at handouts and is fiercely protective of her son. As Peter’s star rises her belief in him will be tested.
MARGARET SHAWCROSS (Female, 20s - early 30s, open ethnicity) A working-class, educated schoolteacher who would rather lose everything than sacrifice her ideals. Her belief in Peter will test the boundaries of her convictions.
DENIS O’CALLAGHAN (Male, Mid 30s - mid 40s, open ethnicity) An enthusiastic, impractical Irishman who believes in the cause. Peter’s most loyal friend and lone supporter after his fall. Will double as TIMSON.
TIMSON (Male, Mid 30s - mid 40s, open ethnicity) Butler at the Mottram household. Will double as O’CALLAGHAN.
KARL MARX JONES (Male, 30s - 40s, open ethnicity) An unapologetic firebrand, singularly focused on the cause. Intelligent, direct and practical--defers to no one.
NED APPLEGARTH (Male, 40s - 50s, open ethnicity) A responsible leader who carries authority with age. Earnest, respectful, believes in the cause.
GLADYS MOTTRAM (Male, 20s - 30s, open ethnicity) Wealthy, intelligent, suspicious of politicians, bored with life and looking for a distraction. A worthy sparring partner, she is not easily won.
FREDDIE MOTTRAM (Male, 30s, open ethnicity) Wealthy, loves money and sees no reason not to enjoy his life. He conceals real kindness behind his flippant manner. Despite his loathing for the cause, he is taken with Peter and doesn’t mind a bit of adventure.
LADY MOTTRAM (Female, 50s - 60s, open ethnicity) Wealthy, authoritative in manner, accustomed to getting her way. She knows exactly which buttons to press to bend people to her will.
