Seeking:
TROY MAXSON
African-American male, 53 years old. A jovial storyteller with a strong singing voice, Troy is strong, expressive, and unpredictable. Married to Rose for over 18 years, Troy is the sole provider and patriarch of his family. An ex-offender and former baseball player in the Negro Leagues, Troy has seen his talent, and others like him, ignored. A victim of blatant oppression and discrimination, Troy has lost faith in mankind’s humanity. Nevertheless, he has not lost his willingness to fight for his individual and collective civil rights. A supporting husband and father, Troy wrestles with the mundane routines of his life coupled with the looming inevitable threat of death. Fighting to maintain a level of respect systematically denied, Troy attempts to resurrect dying relationships. He is a man who embraces music by singing songs and lullabies.
ROSE MAXSON
African-American female, 43 years old. The devoted wife of Troy and mother of Cory; A matriarch, peacemaker, and “voice of reason,” Rose works diligently to keep the men in her life happy, focused and grounded. A woman of grave faith, Rose has a forgiven spirit. Prone to lively conversations, Rose is vibrant and can be counted on to correct Troy’s exaggerated stories. She understands Troy’s discontent and works to soothe his countenance. A homemaker and business woman, Rose does the laundry, cooks dinner, and collects Troy’s money to pay the bills. Rose enjoys singing while completing her daily and weekly chores. A woman of great compassion, Rose fights for Cory’s football scholarship and subsequent college education. She also emotionally and financially supports her step-son, Lyons. She also opts to care for Raynell, her husband’s daughter from an extramarital affair.
CORY MAXSON
African-American male, 17 years old. A popular and prominent High School senior athlete with an opportunity to receive a full football scholarship. He believes his father consistently makes it improbable to achieve his aspirations. In uncovering his independence, he flirts with fear, duty, and deserved respect.
GABRIEL
African-American male, 47 years old. Troy’s younger brother. To achieve greater freedom, Gabriel moves out of Troy’s house and opts to live with Ms. Pearl. He is proud to own a key to a living space with two rooms in which he can come and go at his discretion. Injured in World War II, he has a metal plate in his head. As a result of his injury, he has been provided restitution. He carries an old trumpet tied around his waist and believes he is the Archangel Gabriel. He enjoys singing.
JIM BONO
African-American male, Age range 48- 52. After spending time in the penitentiary with Troy, Jim Bono has since admired and respected Troy. As Troy’s best friend and confidant, Bono values Troy’s friendship and attempts to save Troy from the negative impact of an extramarital affair. Moving from a follower to a leader in his longtime friendship with Troy, Bono values loyalty in relationships. Married to Lucille, Bono works with Troy as garbage collectors.
LYONS
African-American male, 34 years old. Troy’s son from a previous marriage. He is a musician who frequently borrows money from his father. Family oriented, he is married to Bonnie, though they eventually separate. He is open to acknowledging his failures while celebrating his successes.
