LOS OTROS
Book/Lyrics Ellen Fitzhugh

Through 60 years of memories and recitative song, the vastly different lives of two Southern Californian residents, a Mexican-American man and white woman, serendipitously weave together in a profound exploration of what it means to be los otros (the “others”) in America today. The intimate contemporary score creates an unflinchingly beautiful and hauntingly resonant look at the stereotypes that separate us, and the humanity that we share.

Lillian

Tells of a childhood memory of illegal immigrants having parked themselves in caves near the ocean, of her young adult life in Burbank and her Latina housekeeper, and later in her life of an intoxicated attraction to a young man she's determined to "de-virginize”.

Carlos
Male 50-75. Mexican-American man. Shares the details of his life including being a gay accountant and having a lover who is Anglo. Candid and brutally honest about himself and his people. Sings of a childhood memory of picking plums in a Central Valley orchard during World War II and later, as a 75-year-old, he sings about the struggles of a failing mind.
