SYNOPSIS: “English Only is the mantra that rules one classroom in Karaj, Iran, where four adult students prepare for the TOEFL — the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Sanaz Toossi’s intricate, hilarious, and profound ENGLISH is a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play recipient, and Obie Award Winner for Best New American Play.
NOTE: All actors must have the dexterity to speak both English with Iranian accents of varying levels as noted, as well as unaccented English when they’re meant to be speaking Farsi. Clear distinction between the two modes is essential.
MARJAN: 44-year-old, female-identifying Iranian teacher and mother living in Karaj, Iran. Was taught both American and British English. Lived in Britain for 9 years but returned to live in Iran. Wants her students to not just learn English, but to welcome it in as she does. Light accent when meant to be speaking English. NOTE: Some fluency in Farsi a plus.
ELHAM: 28 year-old, female-identifying Iranian med student living in Karaj, Iran. Aced her MCATS, but needs to pass the TOEFL to qualify as a paid teaching assistant, and time is running out. Has big dreams and is not afraid to be loud. Smart. Confident. Easily frustrated. Bulldozes through English. Very thick accent when meant to be speaking English. NOTE: Some fluency in Farsi a plus.
ROYA: 54 year-old, female-identifying Iranian mother and grandmother living in Karaj, Iran. Dignified. Unflappable. Working to master English per son’s wishes in order to maintain closeness with her family, now living in Canada. Thick accent when meant to be speaking English.
OMID: 29 year-old, male-identifying Iranian student living in Karaj, Iran. Good-looking. Something of a showoff. Bold. Surprisingly advanced. Very light, almost imperceptible accent when meant to be speaking English.
GOLI: 18 year-old, female-identifying Iranian student. Naive and full of life. Hopeful. Eager. Sometimes shy. Light, sweet accent when meant to be speaking English.
