EMMA by Jane Austen

Character breakdowns:
Emma Woodhouse - Handsome, clever, rich, with a happy disposition, and a happy home life. The doting daughter of a widower, 21.
Mr. George Knightley - Respected landowner in his late thirties. He is Emma’s brother-in-law and a devoted friend of Mr. Woodhouse and Miss Woodhouse.
Mr. Henry Woodhouse - Patriarch of Hartfield estate and the father of Emma and Isabella. While he has hypochondriacal tendencies, he is friendly and affectionate. He is frail and sometimes foolish.
Miss Harriet Smith - An open, honest, beguiling young lady of dubious parentage who Emma seeks to befriend and improve. Teenager.
Mrs. Ann Taylor Weston - Emma’s former governess and a de-facto member of the Woodhouse family. She is recently married to Mr. Weston and settled nearby at Randalls. She is devoted to Emma and beloved of Mr. Woodhouse.
Mr. Philip Elton - The village vicar. Initially attractive and affable, he is later revealed as superficial and conceited.
Mr. John Knightley/Mr. Robert Martin - Mr. John Knightley: Married to Emma’s sister, Isabella, the younger brother of Mr. George Knightley. He is a lawyer in London. He is rather strict in his dealings with his family. / Mr. Robert Martin: the farmer in charge of Abbey-Mill Farm. He lives with his mother and sisters. He is honest, hardworking, and although not of the gentry, he exhibits some genteel qualities. Mid-late twenties.
Mrs. Isabella (Woodhouse) Knightley/Mrs. August (Hawkins) Elton - Mrs. Isabella (Woodhouse) Knightley: Emma’s older sister. Married to Mr. John Knightley. She is a good mother, elegant, delicate, amiable / Mrs. August (Hawkins) Elton: Married to the vicar, Philip Elton. She is the daughter of a Bristol merchant who assumes more social standing than she has a right to. She is presumptuous, rude, and arrogant.
Mr. Weston - Married to Emma’s confidant, Ann Taylor Weston. He has a grown son from his first marriage, Frank Churchill. He sent Frank to be raised by a wealthy uncle on his mother’s side. Through industry and hard work, Weston has amassed some wealth and standing. A nice fellow.
Frank Churchill - Son of Mr. Weston from his first marriage (mother deceased). Raised by wealthy relatives. Handsome and charming, Frank is interested in dancing, travel and having fun.
Miss (Hetty) Bates - The spinster daughter of the late vicar who cares for her aging mother. While not wealthy or distinguished in any particular way, she is happy and full of good will. She loves to talk.
Jane Fairfax - The orphaned niece of Miss Bates who was raised by Col. Campbell, a friend of her father’s from the army. She is charming, well-mannered, and attractive as well as a bit reserved. The same age as Emma.
