SYNOPSIS: EL MENTIROSO is for grown-ups being bullied by childhood trauma — it's for anyone haunted by harm. Perhaps it winks at you through the mischief of your children; pesters you in your mother’s silence, or befriends you on the toilet in the dark a-las-dos-de-la-mañana(!!) when you think everyone is asleep...
This is a 70-minute dance theater descent into the subconscious of a Fool who is desperate to extract the truth from a lie. This is an irreverent - mythological - game show - locura - fever dream about intergenerational trauma, loss of innocence, and M&Ms.
This production grapples with the memory of sexual abuse. Given the sensitive nature of the material, the Director and/or Co-creators agree to share a draft of the script and meet with potential company members before a contractual agreement is finalized.
NOTE: Dancer with a strong movement background and an experimental sense of play. Performers should be comfortable partnering, performing different dance genres, have experience/enthusiasm for working with masks or clowning, stylistically quirky/strange with a humorous edge, between 20 and 50 years old. More details in the casting breakdown below.
FOOL: CAST. (Latine, male, Spanish speaking, 40-50) A self-professed-well-put-together-fully-functioning-in-control FOOL.
GORDON HOLLYWOOD/MOTHER: CAST. (Latine, female, Spanish speaking, 50-70) A game show host, an emcee, a conductor. Extracting memory from the Fool to reckon with the past. Is this an act of love? Or something else?
HEDONISTO & Understudy Role TBD: (any race, ethnicity, and gender, 20-50) Powered by instinct and primal urge. Awakens the memory with a sensual touch.
DETALIA & Understudy Role TBD: (any ethnicity, any gender, 20-50) All about the facts. In devilish pursuit of the truth.
OTRO & Understudy Role TBD: (any ethnicity, any gender, 20-50) An unknown presence that haunts you like a shadow.
UNDERSTUDY for FOOL & GORDON HOLLYWOOD/MOTHER: Female identifying. Comfortable speaking Spanish.
