EDWIN, The Story of Edwin Booth is new musical that focuses on pivotal moments in the life of Edwin Booth, the greatest Shakespearean actor of his day and the older brother of John Wilkes Booth. It begins on the night Edwin returns to the stage for the first time after Lincoln’s assassination. As he prepares, his personal history unfolds through a series of spectral encounters with figures from his past.
Seeking actors with a facility for Shakespeare. All of the performers, with the exception of Edwin, will assume various other roles throughout the play.
Seeking:
Edwin Booth:
(Mid 30s-mid-40s). Refined, elegant, extremely accomplished Shakespearean actor—haunted by a traumatic childhood as the child of an alcoholic and the errors he committed during the years he was himself alcoholic. Despite receiving numerous death threats, he's committed to the stage to redeem the family’s name. Baritone.
Mollie (Mary Devlin Booth):
(Early-mid 20s). Edwin's wife; a former actress who first met Edwin when she played Juliet to his Romeo. Fierce and loving at the same time, she supports him in his rise to fame, even through his worst episodes of alcoholism. Soprano.
Junius Booth, Sr.:
(Early-late 60s.) The family patriarch: A genius as an actor, he was also a raging alcoholic, prone to bouts of emotional swings. Bass-baritone.
Johnny (John Wilkes Booth):
(Mid-late 30s.) Talented, but self-trained, he is resentful of his brother, though he does hold a kind of sibling affection for him. His attitude toward Lincoln is less vitriolic than other characterizations often indicate. He is secretly in love with Mollie. Tenor/high baritone.
Mary Ann:
(Mid 40s-early 50s.) Junius’ mistress, who passed as his wife for nearly 20 years. Fiercely protective of Junius and the Booth family name, she successfully strives to preserve the dysfunctional family system. Mezzo Soprano/Alto.
Junius Booth, Jr. (June):
Late 40’s. The eldest of the surviving Booth children, he is a charming and high-spirited actor—if a bit shallow and self-centered. He becomes something of an emotional solace to Edwin. Bass/Bass-Baritone.
Rob:
(Early 20s). Assigned as Edwin’s special protector on the night of his return, he is a bit wiser than his youth suggests. Baritone/High baritone.
