Semyon Semyonovich Podsekalnikov
ROLE HAS NOW BEEN CAST. late 20’s-30’s. An unemployed man. He wallows in self-pity and feels crucified by his misfortune.

Maria Lukianovna “Masha”
ROLE HAS NOW BEEN CAST. late 20’s-30’s. Semyon’s wife. She’s a drudge and a nag. She’s exasperated with her husband’s self-pity and her circumstances make her old before her time.

Serafima Ilyinichna
ROLE HAS NOW BEEN CAST. late 50’s-60’s. Masha’s mother, a cleaner. A woman of no subtlety and indefatigable physical strength. She doesn’t think much of Semyon or anyone for that matter.

Alexander Petrovich Kalabushkin
30’s. Semyon’s neighbor, a fairground stall holder. Recently widowed, though that doesn’t stop him from chasing women. Moves like a bear, with effortless strength. His humanity is often obscured by his bad behavior.

Margarita Ivanovna Peryesvetova
late 20’s-30’s. Alexander’s lover, owner of a coffee shop. Once beautiful, now sexy, her existence is a litany of sad events. She is one of life’s survivors.

Yegor Timoveivich
20’s. A postman and a communist who takes it very seriously. He’s bureaucratic to the hilt, and he’s always watching and listening. He lives for the struggle.

Aristarkh Dominikovich Grand-Skubik
30’s/40’s. Dapper, a member of the intelligentsia. He’s a keen observer of the proletariat who wants to speak out against the government but can’t.

Kleopatra Maximovna “Kiki”
ROLE HAS NOW BEEN CAST. late 20’s-30’s. A self-proclaimed romantic. She feels there are no men in the world who understand her Bohemian soul except Semyon. She loves the drama of it all.

Father Yelpidy
ROLE HAS NOW BEEN CAST. 50’s/60’s. A priest steeped in bitterness and alcohol. His thoughts are as black as his robes. He spares no details in his warnings of hell.

Viktor Viktorovich
30’s. An intense, defensive writer who looks like the grim reaper. He is the people’s poet devoting his career to the cracked yet resilient character of the Russian.

Stepan Vasilievich
late 20’s-30’s. Undertaker who doubles as a Beggar Musician.

Oleg Leonidovich
late 20’s-30’s. Undertaker who doubles as a Beggar Musician.
