EFFIE WHITE: This role has been cast. (She/Her/Hers) 18-late 20s. Black / African American identifying. Lead Singer of The Dreamettes. A powerhouse and a soaring singer with undeniable talent. The true underdog. A headstrong, vibrant, confident, and outspoken young woman – a diva. Has a big, gospel belt.
DEENA JONES: This role has been cast. (She/Her/Hers) 18-late 20s. Black / African American identifying. Initially modest backup singer for The Dreamettes, turned lead singer of The Dreams. An ingenue who possess the poise of a leading lady, and a quiet confidence beyond her years. Mezzo, with a full belt.
LORELL ROBINSON: This role has been cast. (She/Her/Hers) 18-late 20s. Black / African American identifying. The softest and youngest of the three Dreams. And though she is bubbly, energetic, youthful, she is also pragmatic and eager for success. Soprano, on top of most triad harmony, with a full belt.
CURTIS TAYLOR, JR: (He/Him/His) 25-45. Black / African American identifying. Slick and forceful used car salesman who becomes the Dreams’ and Jimmy’s manager. Dates Effie, but eventually Deena. Tenor.
JAMES “THUNDER” EARLY: This role has been cast. (He/Him/His) 25-40. Black / African American-identifying. James Brown-like star who takes on Dreamettes as backup singers. He is high energy, verging on chaotic with an endless amount of charm and charisma. Rock / R&B tenor.

ZIPPORAH ZUNDER aka ZIPPY: Female-presenting, late 50s. A journalist, wife and mother whose career has waned in recent years, she’s determined to write a story that matters. Warm, funny (if a little neurotic) she comes off as unassuming but knows how to go for the jugular in her work. The story she’s currently investigating will force her to reexamine everything she thought she knew about herself.
ERICA TEMPLE: Female-presenting, late 50s. Zippy’s best and most complicated friend, she’s caustic, brilliant, with her own kind of glamour. Highly opinionated. A journalism professor whose own career never quite happened.
CLARK PLUMLY: Male-presenting, late 70s - 80s. Zippy’s husband of 26 years. A Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, unpretentious, quietly kind, with a wry sense of humor. Hard of hearing.
ZOE ZUNDER PLUMLY: Female-presenting, mid to late 20s. Clark and Zippy’s daughter. Intelligent, quirky, wrestling with how to label her sexuality. She thinks of herself as a “recent” college graduate, but in fact has been living in her parent’s home for years now, stuck in arrested development. *Doubles as Leah or Lena*
LEAH or LENA: Female-presenting, same age as ZOE. A Russian esthetician. Blunt, with a dark sense of humor that masks her vulnerability. Speaks with an accent. *Doubles as Zoe Zunder Plumly*
HUNTER RUH: Male-presenting, late 20s - early 30s. Seems slightly younger than he is. An aspiring journalist, he’s charming in an offbeat way. Fiercely eager to please. Enthusiastic, often for no reason. Lives in his car. Oddly loveable, with a secret stash of anger locked inside him.
MARK: Male-presenting, in his 50s. The person Erica is currently seeing. Recently divorced. Sells home security systems. Prone to social blunders, but with the soul of a poet. Good natured, he tries hard to fit in, doesn’t always succeed. *Doubles as The Other Mark*
THE OTHER MARK: Male-presenting, late 50s. Zippy’s enigmatic boyfriend from decades ago. He’s still recovering from the stroke he suffered several years ago, that left him more open emotionally. He sometimes struggles to find certain words and walks with a cane. *Doubles as Mark*
