Breakdown

Seeking:

Female Understudy 1:
Will understudy the roles of Cynthia and Heidi (40’s)
* Heidi Hansen: Evan’s mother. Overworked and stretched too thin, Heidi loves her son fiercely, but fears they have begun to grow apart. She is prepared to do anything to repair the damage.
* Cynthia Murphy: Connor and Zoe’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated.

Female Understudy 2:
Will understudy the roles of Zoe and Alana. (17)
* Zoe Murphy: (17) A sensitive, sophisticated high school junior. Cool without realizing it, Zoe could care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. Funny and bright, she has grown up in the long shadow cast by her volatile older brother, Connor, tyrannized along with the rest of her family by his out-of-control behavior. Few rooms are as familiar to her as the inside of a family therapist’s office. Zoe compensates for her brother’s darkness by striving to be warm, nice to everyone, the kind of person who goes out of her way to learn the names of the kids who sit by themselves at lunch. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death, finding it difficult to forgive him for all he did, and at the same time forgive that part of herself that feels nothing but relief in the fact that he’s gone.
* Alana Beck: (17) Outgoing, achingly earnest high school senior Alana is always armed with a bright smile and an unflaggingly sunny outlook. Beneath her extroverted demeanor, however, Alana is in fact haunted by a terrible and abiding loneliness – a loneliness buried so deeply, Alana may not even realize it’s there. This loneliness is what propels her to seize on the death of a classmate as an opportunity finally to find a sense of belonging.

Male Understudy 2:
Will understudy the role of Evan (17)
* Evan Hansen (17): Smart, sincere, and cripplingly self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all. May also understudy the role of Connor Murphy.

Male Understudy 3:
Will understudy the roles of Connor and Jared (17)
* Connor Murphy (17): An angry, disaffected loner, Connor has been a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember, an enigma and a source of endless consternation to his long-suffering parents.
* Jared Kleinman (17): Droll and sarcastic, Jared is forced by his parents to hang out with family friend Evan, for whom he claims to have nothing but disdain. Jared covers his obvious insecurities with a well-practiced braggadocio and a know-it-all arrogance. May also understudy the role of Evan Hansen.
