Preparation
Sides will be provided. Everyone should also prepare a song (32 bars - gospel, blues or R&B). If you have not been seen at Horizon before, please also prepare a contemporary dramatic monologue. Please bring two photos and resumes.

Breakdown

Seeking Actors for 2016 Horizon production of 'da Kink in My Hair. Seeking excellent actors who are strong in singing, dancing, or all of the above. Particularly interested in seeing Equity actors who are new to Atlanta or who have Atlanta housing and are able to work as local jobbers. Horizon does not have access to housing for out of town actors.

''If you want to know a black woman, you touch her hair,'' says Novelette, as she delves into the tresses and stresses of her clients to reveal their hidden stories. In the salon of their West Indian stylist, hurried women converge to have their hair done for dates, jobs and upkeep. They come away with not just a new hairdo, but a lifted soul and a lightened heart. This amazing musical tells their incredible, uncensored, unforgettable tales through dance, song and stories that will move, inspire, and delight!

Seeking:

Novelette:
African-American/West Indian. 35-50 years old. The joke cracking, yet very wise owner of the salon. She is outspoken but has a soft gentle side. She is the “Mother” of the salon. Must be able to do an authentic Jamaican accent.

Sherelle/Nia:
Sherelle: African-American/West Indian. 30-45 years. She is an attractive business woman at the top of her game. She is an Olivia Pope type. Sherelle is slowing sinking into a deep despair, battling her own personal demons and depression. DOUBLES with Nia: Dark skin, a young Nina Simone type. Has natural hair and is grieving the loss of her mother. Must have a strong vocal range.

Sharmaine/Stacey Anne:
African-American/West Indian. 27-39 years old. She is a Hollywood star, she is beautiful, and sexy. Heads turn whenever she walks into the room! However, she is harboring a deep secret, she is a lipstick lesbian and is struggling with her sexuality and her mother’s response to her sexuality. Must have a strong vocal range. DOUBLES with Stacy Anne: African-American/West Indian. **must be able to convincingly play a young girl, 10-13 years old, petite. Stacey Anne is very excitable and dramatic, also very comedic. Stacy Anne is a new immigrant to North America and she is from the Caribbean. Must be able to do a believable Caribbean accent and have knowledge of patois. Stacey Anne is harboring a very deep dark explosive secret… Must be a good singer. A dance background would be an asset.

Suzy:
Caucasian, a southern belle, 25-35 years old. Suzy, is raising her bi-racial son. Suzy is torn about her own internal issues pertaining to race and is struggling with being estranged from her family and raising her son. Must have a strong vocal range.

Patsy:
African-American/West Indian. 45-55 years old. A god fearing Christian woman. She is the epitome of rage, hurt and grief. She is grieving the loss of her only son. Must have a strong vocal range.

Miss Enid:
African American - 60-85 years old. Just got her groove back. She is a full size, sexy older woman! She has great comedic timing and can really SANG!!!!

Female Percussionist:
African American, open age with strong percussion skills and able to bring in their own diverse percussion equipment.
