30s/40s. Sarah’s husband. Recovering alcoholic continually falling off the wagon. Believes the advantages of marriage outweigh the disadvantages.
SUSAN
20s/30s. Southern belle & a wonderful wife. Motherly in her affections towards Robert. High soprano a plus.
PETER
20s/30s. Susan's husband. The perfect husband and ex-husband. Very liberal in his view of relationships.
JENNY
20s/30s. Quietly manipulative, simultaneously square and wise. Loves her husband, David, & will indulge him from time to time. High soprano a plus.
DAVID
20s/30s. Jenny's husband. Is relaxed & always in control. Believes a man should be married and that the sacrifice of freedom is worth what you get in return.
AMY
20s/30s. A frantic neurotic engaged to Paul but terrified of marriage. After a mental breakdown, finally realizes that Paul is, in fact, her soulmate.
PAUL
20s/30s. Amy’s soon to be husband. Steadfast & patient.
JOANNE
40s/50s. Acerbic, demanding, and blunt. Too old to be part of the young crowd, but not old enough to be part of the older crowd. Puts on a brassy front that melts when she is alone with her husband.
LARRY
30s/40s/50s. Joanne's husband. Stoic & centered, but has moments of goofiness.

20s/30s. A girlfriend of Robert’s. Flight attendant who came to NY to live in Radio City. Adorable.
KATHY
20s. A girlfriend of Robert's. New Yorker who's skipping town to go & find rural contentment in Vermont. Star dancer.

20s/30s. A girlfriend of Robert's. Intensely modern, who is seeking adventure & excitement in the City.

Norman Thayer
Retired college professor; describes himself as being older than dirt. Set in his ways, and hard to get along with. Has a dry wit, and enjoys having fun at others' expense. Also uses his wit and intellect to mask his growing infirmities.
Ethel Thayer
Norman's wife; several years younger than Norman. Happy, outgoing, content. Since they met, she has taken the rough edges off of Norman's personality. Intelligent & well grounded, she has been content to defer to Norman on many issues without losing her own identity.
Chelsea Thayer
Only daughter of Norman and Ethel; has a difficult relationship with her parents. Has never gotten along with Norman and feels that Ethel always takes Norman's side of things.
Charlie Martin
Only character in this play who is a native of Golden Pond, Maine. Close in age to Chelsea; has always liked her. Growing up, he saw Chelsea as a pretty, mysterious city girl, and was fascinated with her. The mailman for Golden Pond, having taken over those duties from his uncle.
Bill Ray
Dentist engaged to Chelsea. Has a 13 year old son, Billy. Prior to becoming a teenager, Billy spent more time with his mother than with Bill. Billy will now be living with his father, who is becoming very satisfied with new-found changes in his life, both on personal and professional fronts.
Billy Ray
13 years old, but precocious and worldly for his age. Intelligent, but suspicious & guarded. At this point in his life, he has not spent a lot of time with his father, or any male role model. Recognizes that he has been passed back and forth between his parents out of necessity, but has not really been raised by either of them.

For this revival of the classic Marx Brother’s Comedy we are creating an ensemble of 9 principal actors to play multiple roles. Looking for gifted character actors who are excellent physical comedians & good singers.
Captain Spaulding (Groucho):
Any ethnicity, 30s-40s. Funny & fierce, with incredible verbal dexterity. The anchor of the team; a charming wiseguy. His intelligent & anarchistic sensibility drives the play.
Emmanuel Ravelli (Chico):
Any ethnicity, 20s-40s. A band leader; the musical actor in the ensemble. Plays the piano and/or other instruments (ideally). ‘A loose cannon’ – with great improv sensibility. Actor should be a character singer.
The Professor (Harpo):
Any ethnicity/gender, 20s-40s. Exceptional physical comedian or clown; smart & savvy enough to recreate old routines and help devise new ones. Youngest of the bunch; has a sweetness and innocence that doesn’t exist in the others. While Harpo doesn’t speak or sing, the actor will play other small speaking roles and sing and dance in ensemble numbers.
John Parker/Horatio Jamison (Zeppo):
Any ethnicity, 25-35. John Parker – earnest young lover that sings very well. Handsome, traditional leading man interested in Mary Stewart; should also be a solid dancer. Actor will also play Jamison (Zeppo), the straight man to Groucho’s antics.
Hives/Roscoe W. Chandler:
40s-50s. Any enthnicity/type. Onstage the most, Hives is extremely witty and great with status. Is the servant who can insult you to your face, but you take it as a compliment. Roscoe W. Chandler is a rich tycoon. Open to just about any interesting actor. Does not sing a great deal, but should be musically gifted.
M. Doucet/Wally Winston:
Any Ethnicity, 30s-40s. As Doucet, actor will play an art loving Frenchman. As Wally Winston he is sexy, sarcastic and full of charm; an intellectual with a great love for life. This actor does a great deal of singing and dancing.
Mrs. Rittenhouse:
Any Ethnicity, late 30s-50s. The host of the party. A regal socialite who is always put together; she is a real dame. Does not sing a great deal, but should be musically gifted.
Mrs. Whitehead/Arabella Rittenhouse:
Any Ethnicity, late 20s-40s. Mrs. Whitehead is a conniving socialite trying to thwart Rittenhouse’s success. Sharp, smart, sarcastic and clever. Arabella is Mrs. Rittenhouse’s daughter. She & Wally Winston make a sophisticated and erudite couple. A great comic actress. Sings and dances a great deal.
Grace Carpenter/Mary Stewart:
Any Ethnicity, 25-35. Largest stretch in terms of doubling. Strong character actress who can transform easily. Grace is Whitehead’s sister and partner in crime; a schemer. Mary Stewart is the earnest ingénue. Should be strong singer & dancer.

The following are names of the radio performers who are performing in a live radio version of “It’s A Wonderful Life” on Christmas Eve in 1946. Each performer should be adept at comedy & possess ability to play multiple characters with a distinct array of voices. In between the live radio show there are radio commercials of the period, so singing in a plus.
FREDDIE FILMORE
40s-60s. Plays Potter, Joseph, Peter Bailey, Ernie, Old Man Collins, etc.
JAKE LAURENTS
30s-early 40s. Plays George Bailey (younger and older)
SALLY APPLEWHITE
30s- early 40s. Plays Mary Hatch (younger and older)
LANA SHERWOOD
30s-40s. Plays Violet, Rose Bailey, Ruth, Zuzu, Janie, etc

SOUND OPERATOR
