*The role of Gaston has been cast.*
BELLE - Female, to play 20’s (Mezzo–Soprano) While Belle has the standard fairy tale heroine qualities–kind, gentle, and beautiful–it is more important that she has a 21st Century twist. She is a strong, intelligent, spirited and independent young woman who wants more out of life than an ordinary existence. She is ahead of her time by a long shot. The maturity and depth of her character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit within The Beast, and to love him for it. Belle needs to be able to stand up to Gaston and the Beast, as well as those who don’t seem to understand her, while showing compassion for her father, the servants, and eventually the Beast. This role requires a very strong, honest actor that can find different levels to play beyond the typical ingénue character type. WE DO NOT WANT the typical ingénue. We want a smart actress that can bring something new and fresh to this role. While we want to breathe new life into her we still need to give the children and fans what they expect all at the same time. This is a dark tale and we will be playing up the severity of the situation. Must have a versatile voice that can give a strong soprano mix and belt and she needs to move well and have nice extension.

BEAST – Male, 21-35 (Strong Baritone). Looking for an actor 6’ and over. The Beast is the master of the castle. He is a Prince transformed into a terrifying beast for his lack of compassion. Hot-tempered and commanding, but has a warm, loving heart buried far beneath his gruff exterior. There is anger and menace in The Beast’s appearance and behavior, but increasingly we see his soft and endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It becomes clear that he is a loving, feeling, human being trapped within a hideous creature’s body. Actor should be able to portray a dictator, a hurt child, a hero, a defender, and a smitten prince. Must be a very strong actor of great depth, as well as an excellent singer with a strong speaking voice and stage presence. Needs to be equal parts comedian, dramatic actor and heartbreakingly honest. He should be a very handsome man and someone that also understands how to connect to some much darker and deeper aspects of this character.

MAURICE - Male, 45-65 (Baritone). Belle's loving, eccentric father. Child at heart and inventor in his own world. Despite being a bit scatter-brained, there is no mistaking Maurice’s steadfast love for his daughter Belle. Kindly, gentle, enthusiastic and inventive, becomes single-minded and determined when Belle faces danger. Ideally looking for someone round and slight of height, but will consider all physical types. Must be an honest and loveable actor excellent with comedy and drama. He loves his daughter very much and would lay down his life for her. People think of him as a bumbling funny character actor, he must be more than that.

COGSWORTH - Male, 40-55 (Baritone). Tightly-wound, enchanted mantle clock and head of the Beast's household. Stuffy English man who loves everything to be in its place and strives for perfection. He is uptight, strict, and punctual but also hard-working and faithful. Speaks with a British accent. Role requires a strong comedian with a lot of heart. At his core he wants to please his master and do right by him. He does his job well and we must see him go on his own important journey as well from being this tightly wound person to being someone that can look at what really matters and what is really most important. Acting is the priority, he doesn’t have to have a glorious voice by any stretch. He must sing on pitch and be able to hold his own. Preferably looking for an actor with some heft and slight of stature, but will consider all types.

LUMIERE - Male, 30-45 (Baritone). Suave, debonair enchanted candelabra. A loyal and steadfast servant that always leads with his heart and passion first. Light-hearted, romantic, smooth-talking, and charming. He has a romantic involvement with Babette. Character speaks with a French accent. Role requires a strong actor/comedian and he should move well.

MRS. POTTS - Female, 35-55 (Mezzo-Soprano) We are considering traditional types for this, but also want to explore ages that are more historically accurate to a woman that would have a young child. Both will be considered. Warm-hearted, maternal enchanted teapot. She is loyal, caring, and playful. Mrs. Potts needs a strong, sweet voice and should be able to convey comforting, maternal qualities amidst the chaos at the castle. Character speaks with a British accent. Looking for strong actor with great sincerity and warmth. She is the every mother and grounding force on stage.

BABETTE - Female, 25-35 (Mezzo-Soprano) Saucy, enchanted feather-duster, and the object of Lumiere's affections. She is the playful, gorgeous, seductive French maid. Curves in all the right places. This role requires a comedic actress and she should move well. Character speaks with a French accent.

MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE - Female, 30-55 (Soprano). Former opera diva-turned-enchanted wardrobe. She has a caring, refined, larger than life personality. Excellent comedian with a heart of gold.

CHIP - Male, 7-10 (Boy Soprano) Enchanted teacup and Mrs. Potts' darling little boy. Innocent, playful, and bright-eyed. Looking for a smart child actor that doesn’t reply on just being cute and sounding coached when they speak. I want a kid who knows how to be a kid and not sound like a child musical theatre actor. We will cast a boy in this role.

LEFOU - Male, 20-35 (baritenor) Gaston's bumbling sidekick. Loyal, energetic, and optimistic, but not quite the brightest guy. Goes to extraordinary lengths and suffers repeated humiliation in his efforts to please his master. Looking for a strong character actor that is great with physical comedy. Needs to be a skilled dancer/STRONG mover comfortable with prat falls. Tumbling a plus. Looking for actor slight in height.

ENSEMBLE: (12 men, 12 women) The ensemble is very busy, as they are townspeople, wolves, enchanted objects, etc. Featured roles not mentioned below will be cast from this group.

THREE SILLY GIRLS – Female, to play 20’s. The silly girls are three pretty young maids who swoon over Gaston and will do almost anything just to be near him. They are featured dancers who double as enchanted objects. Each girl should have her own personality. Seeking actors that can play the comic nature of these roles and also play well off each other.

MONSIEUR D'ARQUE - Male, 35-60 (Bari-Tenor with a high A). Scheming proprietor of the local insane asylum. He is a dark, sinister villain who aides Gaston in his plot to marry Belle. Doubles as a townsperson in the ensemble. Seeking someone gaunt and physically different to add to his sinister look. Should be a delicious villain and a truly dark presence. Gets his power from his simplicity.

ENSEMBLE SINGERS: 20’s–50’s. All vocal ranges needed; gorgeous legit high tenors and sopranos to rich altos and bass/baritones. Seeking performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Male and female ensemble singers who move extremely well and are strong actors/smart performers. Singers must move well, not everyone must dance. We want a town of people of all types/ages. Not a town of only college students. We need/want all types, so please don’t type yourself out thinking this is a show for only the kids.

ENSEMBLE DANCERS: 20’s–50’s. All vocal ranges needed. Male and female trained dancers with strong ballet and jazz technique who sing. Also looking for guys who tumble. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Must sing well and hold their own harmony. We want a town of people of all types/ages. Not a town of only college students. We need/want all types, so please don’t type yourself out thinking this is a show for only the kids.
