Breakdown

Experience the timeless tale of "Star Crossed Love" in this 360-degree theatrical concert celebration of famed Director Baz Luhrmann. Shakespeare's original star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet, have found a new home on the Las Vegas Strip in the magically transformed Palazzo Theater. This heart pumping, soul stirring soundtrack mash-up features music from Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, Strictly Ballroom, Australia and La Boheme. The cast features a stunning assembly of vocal acrobats, actors and dancers performing an epic setlist that includes "Back To Black," “Lady Marmalade", "Your Song," "When Doves Cry", and many more. Part rock concert, part drama, part nightclub and all SPECTACULAR!

PLEASE SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES. Because of the variety of musical styles covered within each part, no role need be any particular race. In fact, this mashup of styles and sounds require creative casting choices that often look completely different from the actors in the films.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AMAZING VOCALISTS WHO CAN ACT. WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR AMAZING DANCERS WHO ACT.

Seeking:

[JULIET] (Female, 18-25 to play 16-18) As Shakespeare’s most famous ingénue, this actress must bring meaning to the heightened language with effortless clarity while looking far too young to understand such complexities - baby faced with the fire of passion and intelligence in her eye. Vocally we are looking for a sound that contains more than just a sweet, pure sincerity but also a unique quality that is all her own - a voice that can sing “Lovefool” with innocent earnestness and “Kissing You” with a maturity and soul beyond her years.

[ROMEO] (Male, 18-25 to play 17-20) As Juliet’s counterpart, he should also bring meaning to Shakespeare’s language with effortless clarity while looking too young to be aware of it. A pretty boy who uses a dark, almost criminal edge to cover a raw, open heart. Young and brooding with self-destructive tendencies. Vocally he is a true rock tenor who sings Jack Black’s cover of “Love is Blindness” with gut-wrenching intensity.

[STAR] (Female, late 20s to early 40s) The young mother of Juliet. Inspired by Satine from The Moulin Rouge, Shirley Hastings from Strictly Ballroom, and Lady Capulet, she has the strength, sex appeal, and confidence of a true show-stopping diva, and the old-fashioned comedy chops of a vaudeville sideshow. The life of every party who, in nothing but a corset, can channel both the classic showgirl in Marilyn Monroe’s “Sparking Diamonds” and the popstar in Fergi’s “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” all with a great sense of humor.

[MAESTRO] (Male, any age over 30) Juliet’s father but also our esteemed host and Master of Ceremonies, this is the character that speaks and associates most directly with the audience. Inspired by Zidler from The Moulin Rouge!, he is a paradox of styles, both comic and tragic, both high and low brow. He brings sophistication to the bordello and sex to the opera. Must have incredible stage presence and natural chemistry with a live audience including the ability to go off script if necessary. This is not a heavy singing role (there is some) so the focus here is almost entirely on personality.

[ANGEL] (Female, 20s) Based on Gatsby’s long lost love, Daisy, in The Great Gatsby. She is an enigmatic figure of grace and beauty who moves in a haze of mysterious sadness. Hard to read but nonetheless captivating, she carries with her both the maternal nature of Mother Mary watching over the story and the innocent sadness of one of God’s lost children. Musically her inspiration can be found in Lana Del Rey and especially Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine whose song “Over the Love” is the show’s musical climax and most difficult vocal of the night. She is this show’s musical center and must have the ability to belt very high with ease.

[POET] (Male, early 20s-early 30s) Romeo’s most passionate and charismatic friend, Mercutio. A rebel rouser who can pick a fight with thugs one minute and be the life of the party the next. Always the center of attention, he arrives at Capulet’s Ball in drag with his gun tucked into his garter belt, begging for a fight. Looking for, but not limited to, someone with a unique ethnic background. Mick Jagger meets Hedwig.

[MAGICIAN] (Male, late 20s-early 40s) Verona’s hippie spiritual leader. Looking like he just returned from Burning Man, with wild hairstyle and beard, he still manages to ground the story, and it’s two young lovers, with depth and meaning. A grower of his own “herbs”, he also serves as the community’s medicinal pleasure chest. Open hearted, warm presence with a great handle on heightened text. Musical inspiration from Rufus Wainwright and a bit of David Bowie.

[BALLADEER] (Male, early 20s-mid 30s) Based on Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, he is dark, mysterious, and the only true badass in a story full of young men who wish they were. Precise and lethal with his 9mm, his focus and presence razor sharp. Authentically Rock ‘n’ Roll, he also serves as a front man for the band. Some experience a plus - i.e. plays electric guitar or sings in a rock band. Vocally looking for very high pop-rock tenors who can sing “Roxanne” in Sting’s original key many times a week.

THE DANCERS

[NURSE] (Female, mid 20s - 30s) Plays the confidante and best friend of Juliet. With inspiration from Fran in Strictly Ballroom, Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, and Juliet’s Nurse, she has the style of a 1920s Flapper, the dance moves of a Ballroom Champion, and a heart of gold. MUST BE AN EXCELLENT DANCER. Experience with partner dancing a huge plus but not a requirement. The Dancers tell the story of Star Crossed Love “strictly” through dance, covering several different styles (i.e. The Argentinian Tango, The Charleston, The Fox-Trot, etc.) as they reflect each chapter of this tragic love story.

[PRINCE] (Male, mid 20s - 30s) With inspiration from The Duke from Moulin Rouge! and Scott Hastings from Strictly Ballroom, he is the perfect specimen of man to whom Juliet is betrothed. Has the classic good looks of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, the dance skills of a Ballroom Champion, and the massively inflated ego of The Duke.

[THE GREEN FAIRY] (Female, 18-mid 30s) Female. MUST BE AN EXCELLENT VIOLINIST. She is a constant musical and physical presence throughout the night, popping up in all different corners of the room weaving a pattern of melody through the story. A mysterious beauty with both classical style and a certain amount of spunky playfulness.

[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] (18-mid 30s) The Flapper Girls, The “Diamond Dog” Can-Can dancers of the Moulin Rouge, and party-goers at Capulet’s Ball. These roles will also cover the lead female roles so true triple threats are required.

[MALE ENSEMBLE] (18-mid 30s) The Charleston Charlies, Johns at the Moulin Rouge, and the rival gangs of Montagues and Capulets. These roles will also cover the lead male roles so true triple threats are required.
