Breakdown
ART Character Breakdown
Seeking:
Marc:
(male, 40s - 50s) A successful aeronautical engineer, smart and articulate, but driven by an almost irrational irritation over his friend Serge’s recent acquisition of a work of modern art. He is outspoken and a bit pretentious at times, but remains a practical thinker who is resolved to make Serge admit his absurdity. Tightly wound, stubborn, and unafraid to ruffle some feathers, no matter the expense.
Serge:
(male, 40s - 50s) Marc’s friend. A successful dermatologist who has a keen interest in art and has recently bought a very expensive all-white painting. He is smart, vivacious, and seemingly confident in who he is and what he wants. A man who tends to permit his heart to overrule his mind, Serge allows himself to come undone at the hands of his longtime friend.
Yvan:
(male, 40s - 50s) Marc & Serge’s friend. Easygoing and apathetic at times, Yvan has recently begun working as a salesman for a wholesale stationary business, after having a not-so-successful career in textiles. Soon to be married, Yvan is busy trying to solidify the details of his new life when his friends bring him into the heated disagreement between them. Yvan has an incessant need to please, which can sometimes lead to abuse being heaped upon him.
RED Character Breakdown
Seeking:
Mark Rothko:
(male, 45 – 50) A Russian-American Abstract-Expressionist painter, a driven, dedicated and incessantly stubborn man at the peak of his career. Highly opinionated and self-important, with a mind so wrapped up in itself he cares little for the thoughts and feelings of those around him. Rothko is a complicated man with a rock-solid exterior, but he lives in fear of his generation’s imminent replacement. Rothko also considers himself to be a Jewish philosopher and intellectual.
Ken:
(male, 20s) Rothko’s assistant, young and vibrant with a somewhat nervous energy that steadies over time. He is observant, eager to learn, yet unafraid to challenge Rothko. Just as Rothko pushes Ken to be better himself, Ken unexpectedly does the same for Rothko.
