BREAKDOWN
SENEX:
55-65 Any ethnicity. Described as a “dirty old man”, and rightfully so. He wants to regain his youth and have a fling, but is terrified of being caught by his overbearing wife. He’s a family man, yearning to be a bachelor---an old fellow yearning to be a young buck. He can lie when he has to, but isn’t particularly good at it. He wants to have sex, but once again, isn’t particularly good at it. He’s got a bit of the “song and dance man” in him, and a bit of the Jewish comic. Needs to move well and sing with a loud, distinctive voice.
HERO:
20-26, any ethnicity. Boyish, open-faced, and sincere. Energetic. Falls in love quickly. Smart, but inexperienced. Not a dumb kid, just new to all this sex stuff. Strong singing voice, lean body. Funny. Prepare “Love, I Hear” from the score.
PHILIA:
20-26 Any ethnicity. Virginal, pretty, and extremely naïve. Her entire purpose in life is to be beautiful and to please a man, therefore her head is hollow. But she has a good heart and trusts completely. Actress must be attractive, agile, and possess an absolutely lovely voice. Prepare “Lovely” and “That’ll Show Him” from the score.
DOMINA:
48-58 Any ethnicity. As the name implies, she is a domineering woman. Imperious, loud, and pushy. She is accustomed to having the last word and getting her own way. Her servants, as well as her husband, fear her. She’s a big believer in family, however. Huge mezzo voice, and a face that could stop a tank. Prepare “That Dirty Old Man” from the score.
