JENNA – Female, 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. A woman stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. Finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Has a fantastic pop/rock voice with great range.
DAWN – Female, 20s, any ethnicity. She is the youngest of the waitresses. Thick glasses and hair parted 14 centimeters to the left — eccentric is the nice way to say she’s slightly unusual and not so slightly OCD. She sets the tables, painstakingly ensuring each salt and pepper shaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. Has an excellent pop/rock/folk voice.
BECKY – Female, early 40s-early 50s, ANY ethnicity. The oldest of the three waitresses. Irreverent, irascible, been there, made it back, and somehow kept her forward and sometimes wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Has a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt.
DR. POMATTER – Male, 30s-early 40s, any ethnicity. Handsome, endearing, and neurotic. Has a warm, if clumsy, manner. Jenna’s gynecologist with whom an unexpected extramarital affair is born. Has a quirky sense of humor and a big heart, despite the fact that he’s contributing to the affair. Has impeccable comedic timing and moves well. Has a very strong pop/rock tenor that can navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles with ease.
EARL – Male, 20s-30s. Caucasian. Jenna’s husband. Peaked in high school, handsome in a gruff way, but that face is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer. Just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity, to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. If auditioning for EARL, come prepared with a song in the vein of Elton John or a similar contemporary singer/songwriter. Guitar playing a plus.
OGIE - Male, 30s, any ethnicity. Strange, yet oddly lovable. He becomes slightly obsessed with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after she goes on a 5-minute date with him. Quirky, incredibly persistent, and odd, yet kind. Has excellent comedic timing. Has an excellent pop/rock tenor/baritone tenor sound.
JOE - Male, 60s-70s, any ethnicity. The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky and Cal work. A seemingly old, curmudgeonly man with a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie), warm at heart. A sarcastically funny and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Very funny.
CAL - Male, any ethnicity, 40s. A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. Has a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops. Has a strong contemporary baritone singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and has excellent comedic timing.
LULU – Young Girl, to play 4-5 years old. Daughter of Jenna and Earl. A sweet, carefree child who appears in the last scene of the show. She is confident and be able to engage in a small amount of dialogue and movement on stage. Will also consider twins who meet these requirements.
MALE ENSEMBLE - Males, any ethnicity, ranging from mid-late 20s to late 40s. Must have excellent pop/rock voices in the style of Sara Bareilles. Must have excellent comedic timing and be able to play a range of characters comprising the community where the story takes place. Must be strong movers/dancers.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE - Females of any ethnicity, ranging from mid-20s to late 30s. Must have excellent pop/rock voices in the style of Sara Bareilles. Must have excellent comedic timing and be able to play a range of characters comprising the community where the story takes place. Must be strong movers/dancers.
First Rehearsal: Monday, May 5, 2025
First Preview: Friday, June 6, 2025
Opening: Friday, June 13, 2025
Closing: Sunday, June 29, 2025
ALBERT PETERSON - is a young man in his early thirties, often anxious. President of Almaelou Music Corporation, Conrad Birdie’s manager. He is in a romantic relationship with Rosie, who is also his secretary. He is very eager to please everyone, which gets him into trouble. A song and dance guy. Baritone.
ROSE / ROSIE ALVAREZ - is a young Latina woman in her early thirties. Very smart, confident. She is in a relationship with Albert, who is also her boss. She loves Albert but is greatly frustrated by his lack of commitment to their relationship and his unwillingness to follow his own dreams. 2nd Soprano/Alto.
KIM MCAFEE - Teen girl, 15 years old. Seemingly confident and popular with the other kids. Trying to act much older and more sophisticated than she is. Belongs to the Conrad Birdie Fan Club, she is selected to be “kissed goodbye” by the rock and roll star Conrad Birdie on national television. Soprano.
CONRAD BIRDIE – a rock-n-roll star in his mid-20s, has a lot of appeal as a singer and celebrity but loses all the luster when he’s just talking. He’s not very smart, quite rude, and only worried about himself. He’s being drafted into the Army following his last performance in Sweet Apple and wants to party. Think Elvis. Baritone.
MRS. DORIS MCAFEE - Kim’s mother. She loves Kim and wants to support her growing independence, but she also wants her little girl back. She also gets carried away in all of the Conrad Birdie madness. Soprano.
MR. HARRY MCAFEE - Kim’s father, a very blustery and cranky kind of guy when he feels he’s losing control of his household, disapproves of Kim’s new attitude and is very inconvenienced by the Conrad Birdie thing until he realizes it will make him a celebrity too. Baritone.
RANDOLPH MCAFEE – Kim’s younger brother. He gets ignored and lost in the shuffle with all of Kim’s drama, but he continues to put himself in the midst of it while trying to get his Dad’s attention. Flexible voice part.
MRS. PETERSON (MAMMA) - She is Albert’s mother, which is her most important title in the world. However, she uses her love for her son like a wooden club to guilt Albert into doing what she wants him to. She is also part owner of Almaelou. She sees Rose as the enemy at all times. She often negatively refers to Rose’s “Spanish” (Hispanic) background to annoy Rose and mess up their relationship. She has a dry, stereotypical New Yorker attitude and knows how to throw in the drama to get what she wants. 2nd Soprano/Alto.
URSULA MERKLE - Teenage friend and neighbor to Kim. She’s hyper-enthusiastic, and over the top, especially about the Conrad Birdie Fan Club. She’s willing and ready to do anything, as long as Kim is a part of it. Soprano.
HUGO PEABODY – Teenaged steady boyfriend to Kim McAfee. Hugo is well-liked by kids in the school and is an all-around “good kid.” He is persuaded to take desperate measures, though, when Conrad Birdie comes into town to kiss his girlfriend, Kim. Non-Singing Role.
CHARLES F. MAUDE OR “MAUDE” – Proprietor and bartender of Maude’s Roadside Retreat. Rough guy, used to throwing people out of his bar when needed. Tenor.
GLORIA RASPUTIN – Tap-dancing “secretary” that Mrs. Peterson hires to interfere with Rose and Albert’s relationship.
