2017-2018 Paid Apprenticeships - Huntington Theatre Company

LISTING INFORMATION

The Huntington Theatre Company Apprenticeship is a full-time, paid, season long program which allows college graduates to bridge the gap between their educational experiences and professional careers in regional theatre.



Apprenticeships are available only as a full-time season commitments, from June or August until early June.



Internships are available in the following areas:

Apprentices are paid an hourly rate of $11 and average 40 hours a week and are offered the option of health, dental, & retirement planning benefits, as well as free tickets to productions.



PRODUCTION APPRENTICESHIPS



Apprentices gain experience assisting and providing integral support to the production department heads, staff, directors and designers in the implementation and maintenance of our productions. They will become well acquainted with the steps involved in taking a production from drawings to physical reality on stage, and with all of the duties and responsibilities of their respective department. The apprentice will develop skills to help solve problems and gain experience with various equipment and methods, as well as learn about budgeting, scheduling and resource allocation.



Our production departments execute the designs and production requirements for seven to eight subscription productions; a production for the BU Opera Institute; educational and community outreach programs; facility rentals; and special events, using our production, main-stage and second-stage facilities. Apprentices will get to know students, professional technicians and crafts persons from all walks of professional theatre including Tony Award-nominated (perhaps winning) designers and directors.



Opportunities for additional income are plentiful, with freelance work available in Boston's ever expanding theatrical scene at a variety of levels. Some flexibility is built in to each position to suit the skills of the successful applicant and to further their educational and professional goals. The Huntington proudly maintains a high level of production value and successful candidates should leave this apprenticeship prepared to step into any number of widely available positions in professional theatre.

CURRENT OFFERINGS:



Costumes: helps maintain costume stock inventory; acts as a stitcher in costume construction of Huntington Theatre Company shows; assists with fittings when necessary; Acts as a dresser on wardrobe crew for shows during the season. Electrics: Assists with preparation (color, dimmering, etc) of all Huntington shows and events. During load in/tech/strike, the apprentice works with over hire crew and Master Electrician team; occasionally will lead projects on these days as well. Programs and runs the light board for show runs; Helps in inventory of office supplies, lamps, color, and all equipment. Cover Letters and Recommendations may be addressed to Kat Herzig.

Props: Participates in the construction of Props. Helps maintain prop stock inventory. Works load-ins and strikes, and may be a part of at least two run crews through out the season; Must be knowledgeable in the safe use of typical wood shop machine and hand power tools. Needs to have basic knowledge of sewing, upholstery, casting and paint techniques. Cover Letters and Recommendations may be addressed to Kristine Holmes.

Scenery:Participates hands on in the construction of Scenery. Works load-ins and strikes, and will be a part of at least two run crews through out the season; Must be knowledgeable in the safe use of typical wood shop machine and hand power tools. Scenic Painting: Participates hands on in the execution of designed renderings for all scenery as well as maintaining work space and tools. Works with all members of the Paint department, both staff & job-in employees; Basic painting skills are essential. Experience with color mixing, layout and drop painting are desirable. Sound: Helps in maintaining and organizing equipment, preparing and installing the plot; programs sound cues, executing the show, maintains equipment and plot, and works directly with sound designers and composers; assists with special events. Stage Management/Production Assistant: experience productions from first rehearsal through final performance. Work under AEA stage managers; attend daytime rehearsals and become an active run crew member during evening performances. Cover Letters and Recommendations may be addressed to Bethany Ford.

*All Production Apprentices may serve on at least 2 run crews.



ADMINISTRATIVE APPRENTICESHIPS



Artistic Producing/Casting: closely with our Associate Producer helping in all aspects of line producing the season, assist with local casting calls, and take an active role in our 35 Below program.



Artistic Literary Management: Gather research for all season productions; assemble dramaturgical materials; script reading and evaluation; assist the Literary Programs and Dramaturgy Associate in the logging, tracking, and processing of scripts.



Calderwood Pavilion: This unique apprenticeship revolves around the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion, home to the Huntington Theatre Company’s second stage space and host to many of Boston’s up and coming arts companies. Job duties will vary from administrative tasks, to involvement with technical aspects of load-ins and strikes. The Huntington is looking for a candidate who is interested in an all-around theatrical experience. This person would get experience with assisting event management, front of house, and coordination with many different theatre companies renting the building.



Development: Work on our annual Gala with duties to include: auction item procurement, on-line auction site preparation, Tribute Program Book ad sales assistance and ad prep. Also help with donor and prospect research.



Education: This apprenticeship is vital to the Codman Academy charter high school program. One will make in-school pre-show visits for our student matinees; assist the Education Director with Poetry Out Loud program and August Wilson monologue competition, and help in writing curriculum.



Marketing/ Public Relations: Assisting in promotions and outreach for shows; hosting special events; surveying audiences and analyzing audience data; recruiting local businesses for sponsorships; and contributing articles to our newsletters and publications.
