The 2016 awards season officially began last night with the Golden Globes, honoring excellence in film and television.
The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, aired Sunday, January 10, 2016, LIVE from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
Among the night's winners was MOZART IN THE JUNGLE, an Amazon series featuring Broadway's Bernadette Peters. The show took home the award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy. Series star Gael García Berna also took home a trophy for Best Actor TV Series Musical or Comedy.
In a surprise win, Rachel Bloom received a nod for her work in The CW musical comedy CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, co-starring Broadway's Santino Fontana. The emotional actress shared in her acceptance speech that the project almost didn't come to fruition until The CW was willing to give it a shot.
Lady Gaga took home an acting prize for her critically acclaimed performance in the latest installment of FX's AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL.
Other Broadway vets who took home awards included Maura Tierney for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for THE AFFAIR, and Christian Slater, for his supporting role in USA's MR. ROBOT. Aaron Sorkin was also recognized for his work as screenwriter for the film STEVE JOBS.
PBS's presentation of WOLF HALL won the award for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture made for Television.
Tony Award winner Denzel Washington (FENCES) was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award by fellow actor Tom Hanks. As BWW previously reported, Washington will be producing the entirety ofAugust Wilson's 10-play American Century Cycle for HBO.
