Mezcal is a popular spirit to sip and savor. It is also an essential ingredient in some of the most tempting craft cocktails. And now, a new and exciting book, "Viva Mezcal" by authors, Lindsey Moore and Jennifer Boudinot has been released by Bluestreak Books, an imprint of Weldon Owen. The book is a perfect size for your home bar or coffee table, and provides fascinating information along with fantastic drink recipes that you can make using mezcal.

We like that the book includes history that gives you the complete story of mezcal and its areas of production. Mezcal is a small-batch liquor that is typically made by Oaxacan families in Mexico. Artisanal mezcal follows a delicate underground baking process that has existed for hundreds of years. Like Tequila, it is made from the agave plant. While fine tequila is made exclusively of blue weber agave, mezcals can be made from as many as 50 varietals of the plant. This offers mezcal drinkers unique qualities and tastes to be enjoyed.

"Viva Mezcal" includes expert tasting notes on almost every brand available in the US. This is especially important for people who are learning to appreciate the spirit or want to elevate their knowledge. The book also contains 50 cocktail recipes using Mezcal that you can make at home with twists on classic drinks and inventive originals. You'll love the "Bitter Bird" created by one of the book's authors, Lindsey Moore. The cocktail is a refreshing blend of Mezcal, grapefruit juice, lime juice, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and tonic water garnished with a sprig of rosemary. The "Bloody Maria" is an ideal brunch drink that uses mezcal and Bloody Mary mix of your choice garnished with roasted jalapenos, roasted tomatoes, and chile salt. You can even try the "Oaxacan Negroni. This classic gin-based drink is excellent when made with mezcal.

About the Authors

Lindsey Moore and Jennifer Boudinot are two friends and Mezcal aficionados living in Brooklyn, New York. Head bartender at La Loba Cantina, one of New York City's only authentic Mezcallerias, Lindsey has traveled to Mezcal plantations around Oaxaca, including Del Maguey (the world's best known brand), where she learned to distill her own agave. Jennifer's cocktail recipes are soon to appear on PasteMagazine.com, and she has appeared on the "Clever Cookstr" podcast promoting past cookbooks, which include The Book of Dangerous Cocktails, The Great Meatballs Book, and Gourmet Pizza Made Easy.
