This year we can give thanks for diversity in America, especially when it comes to food! For Thanksgiving on November 24th Modern Israeli restaurant Green Fig (www.greenfignyc.com, @greenfignyc) will serve a three-course feast ($42 per person) by one of the city's most creative young chefs, who marries stateside holiday traditions and autumn ingredients with the flavors of the Middle East and Mediterranean.
Chef Gabriel Israel (ex-Boulud Sud, Shuka Truck) grew up in Tel Aviv celebrating Thanksgiving with his California-born mother, so he draws from personal experiences for the holiday menu. Each guest chooses a first course: Butternut Squash Soup with labane cheese; cumin-seasoned Smoked Mushrooms with polenta; or roasted Pumpkin with nutmeg and cinnamon, finished with toasted pumpkin seeds, yogurt and honey, served with sweet potato chips. For entrees, Chef Gabriel is doubling down on turkey, offering Turkey "Osso Buco" with chestnuts, pumpkin and freekeh as well as roasted and carved Turkey seasoned with the Middle Eastern spice blend Baharat and cumin. Pescatarians can relish in Hailbut, its skin rendered crispy for fish "chicharron," while vegetarians can dig into Gnocchi that epitomize autumn, complete with sweet potato cream and brussels sprouts. Dinner also includes dessert, while additional sides are available a la carte.
Thanksgiving at Green Fig will be served 11:30am-10 pm. The restaurant is located at 570 Tenth Avenue near 42nd Street, 4th Floor of YOTEL. Reservations can be made by calling the restaurant at 646-449-7790.
